I recently bought a new sound card, the asus xonar dgx. I went to their website and downloaded/installed the latest windows 8.1 64bit driver. After restarting the computer everything is weird. My desktop has no icons and I can't open the start screen. I've performed a sfc /scannow check and it came up with errors. Hoping to get some help soon as my pc is pretty much unusable for daily life now. I am running windows 8.1 pro 64 bit

edit, i can make my desktop show icons by right clicking and refreshing it, but they have a black box on all of them where that shortcut logo at the bottom left should be

Hi,

I will get back to you properly at the weekend - I don't have long right now.

Since you're running Windows 8, let's see what DISM can do for us automatically.

DISM

  1. Press the Windows Key on your keyboard and X to open up the Power User Tasks Menu
  2. Click (or tap) Command Prompt (admin)
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for this to finish before you continue (approximately 15 minutes)

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

When i press windows key and X nothing comes up, just a normal windows sound

EDIT: used task manager to open cmd as admin

There should be a small menu appear in the bottom left of the screen, above the start button.

PowerUserTaksMenu.jpg

If not, right click the Start Button and it will appear.

Hi,

That's done a lot of the work for me! :)

Hi,

Just skimmed over the log. DISM fixed almost everything, there is one minor corruption left:

Hi,

I've put together a fix for that last corruption - I found some time :)

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.
