Hello. I'm new here and I'm not a computer genius. Well I have a problem with Windows 8.1Pro. Windows update wont work. It will sit for hours and do nothing. the Update window in the settings will become non responsive. I have tried sfc /scan now and I just get an error message and it says I have a corrupt file that it can't repair. I read through the forums and tried some dism commands and I just get more messages about not being able to fix the corrupt files.

Any help would be great. I would rather not reinstall windows 8.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Lets get started here by viewing the results of the SFC scan.

Export CBS folder

  1. Right click on the

    button
  2. Click on File Explorer
  3. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  4. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  5. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  6. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  7. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  8. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  9. Attach this to your next post please.
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or One Drive

Thanks
Alex

Thanks. I'm having trouble uploading the attachment. I find the folder attachment and it starts processing but nothing shows up.

Hi ajc6882 - I'm working with Go The Power on this. I'm in training and all my posts are reviewed by him for accuracy before posting. We see the corruption. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Fix Corruption

1. Download SFCFix.exe and save this to your Desktop.
2. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
3. Double click on SFCFix.exe to open it.
4. Follow all on screen instructions and upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop named SFCFix.txt.
5. Please post the contents of this log in your next post. Thank you.

Step#2 - Verify Corruption is fixed
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.
