[SOLVED] Windows 8 updates no go can't update to 8.1

Hi All
I'm new to this site and need some help. I have Windows 8 installed and for the last few months have errors (most recently 800703F1) when I try to get updates. Since it won't complete the updates I'm unable to update to 8.1. I've been waiting for the release of Win 10 hoping it will get by these problems with updates I'm currently having but have heard I'll have the same issues when I try to update to 10.

So I'm hoping someone can help solve my current problem so I can update to 8.1 and then to 10. Attached are my DISM & CBS files

You may have a corrupted registry hive but I'd like to take a look. Please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.
 
Hmmmm, there is no "components" file in the location you specified (my boot drive is "H" so that is where I looked). I did a search of my system and only found a "components" file from a backup I did about 3 months ago (but not in the H:\Windows\System32\Config folder). How do create a new components file or should I copy the 3 month old backup into the Config directory?

p.s. I'm out of town starting tomorrow for 3 weeks so I may not be able to do anything more until I'm back. Thanks for your help so far!
 
Whoops, ignore the post above, tried to edit it but somehow reposted it as well as this edited version, sorry!

That's no good if one's not there. Let's take a look this way. Please do the following before.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Confirmed. That's your issue. If you have a backup of your COMPONENTS hive you can place it in H:\Windows\System32\Config and see how it goes. I'm concerned why it's gone though.
 
OK, I'll copy the old file back to where it should go. How will I know if this solves my problems, just try to do an update? Or should I run DISM or SCFix again?
 
I would go ahead and try to update once it's back. If it works, great. If it doesn't work then yes do the following.

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
    button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
    Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.
 
Still won't update. When I run DISM it reports an error 1009, configuration registry database is corrupt. The cbs.txt is attached.

I verified that your hive is corrupt beyond repair. Unfortunately, since you don't have the DVD, your only options are:

1. Borrow a Windows 8 x64 DVD from someone and do a repair install. This will allow you to keep all your data and programs and not have to re-install anything.
2. Refresh your PC which will allow you to keep your data untouched but you will need to re-install your programs.
3. Reset your PC back to the beginning. Your data will be lost (make sure you have a backup of it) as well as your programs.

You obviously have your recovery disk that you made as well. Sorry we couldn't be of more help.
 
Thanks a lot Brian! I certainly appreciate the work you've done. I assume I won't be able to upgrade to Win 10 till this problem is solved? I'll see if I can find someone with a win8 dvd. Really don't want to lose my programmes!
 
No, you won't be able to upgrade to Windows 10 without this being fixed. If you're machine is an OEM (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.) you usually can contact them for replacement media for a very nominal cost.
