Windows 8 Updates Fail To Install

Hi,

I previously posted this in the Microsoft Forum and was unable to resolve the issue. I hope there may be someone here that may be able to help me.

I discovered this problem early last year when I attempted to download Microsoft Office 2007 and it failed to install. Shortly thereafter I discovered the Windows updates were failing as well. I tried using multiple programs and scanned for viruses (tried and removed McAfee, Advanced Systemcare, CC Cleaner and Malwarebytes)-all came back clean (currently only using Windows Defender), hid Microsoft services and disabled all third party services, attempted to download manually, one at a time, ran DISM Scanhealth/restorehealth, SFC/Scannow and chkdsk which all came back fine. I have used the Windows update troubleshooter and it continually fixed two problems, but updates would still fail. I have also attempted a system refresh and system reset after backing up my files, but they also both fail. System restore was not set up to an earlier point so I was unable to use that. I have also checked my drivers and they are showing up to date. I have a few updates that I have been able to get, usually Windows Defender updates, but almost all others fail. I have an ASUS Q200E, but it shows up as an X202E on the system info (same computer, different processer) and windows 8 was preinstalled on the system. I have checked the windows update logs and have the following errors: 0x800703f1 and 0x80070422. Internet works fine and I can access all other programs with no issues.

I have been working on this issue for quite a while and currently have 83 important and 3 optional updates that I have not been able to install.

I attempted multiple times to attach the entire CBS zip file, but I believe it may be too big. I added the main log. Please let me know if I need to add anything else for review.

I would really appreciate any suggestions or assistance anyone can provide. : )

Thanks!

Hello seuban, welcome to Sysnative!

As you suspected, your logs were too big and didn't upload, here's how to upload them to me:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. [sfcfixdownload]Download SFCFix[/sfcfixdownload] (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFix.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

Thank you for your quick response. It's been running for a few hours now. It's still processing directive 1. Do I need to allow it to go on or should I stop and restart it?

Have you got a slow internet connection? It should be uploading your components hive and CBS logs to me which could be up to 100MB in total.

No my connection is good. I'm not sure why it is taking so long. Should I try and restart it or will that cause a problem?

We've had no logs come through from you so yeah that's probably best. It won't cause any problems so feel free to restart it.

It's still processing directive 1. I have attempted to restart it twice with the same result. The curser is blinking so I assume it's trying to work. What would you suggest I do now?

Hi seuban,

Okay never mind then, no idea what's going on with SFCFix but we're going to have to do this another way:

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Upload this file to a file host of your choice (Dropbox, SkyDrive, SendSpace etc.) then send me the link.

Hi seuban,

Thanks for the logs. Can you go to this link please:

support.microsoft.com/kb/910336

Then follow the instructions under Additional manual steps (ignore the DISM/SURT part).
