Hello,
Thank you all for posting such clear instructions on how to address this problem (and having such a helpful forum)

3 weeks ago my windows updates started failing and they have consistently failed ever since. For a week or so my keyboard stopped working but then suddenly
worked again. Not sure what to make of that but this issue seems to be expanding in other areas - I can no longer use Itunes and it fails when trying to install.

I have tried running a few of the C: command prompt suggestions I have found on the net 1.) sfc/scannow 2.) DISM 3.) another DISM (I don't recall specifically) hoping that would correct the issue but the updates continue to fail.

I have run diagnostics now and received 'Error 800703F1' on my most recent failed attempt.

The requested link to the components file is included below. Thanks in advance for any assistance or guidance!

I should add that for clarity that i'm running Windows 8.0 (never updated to 8.1 because it would always error out) w/ 64B etc.
and also am attaching cbs.txt file if that would be pertinent although I am not entirely certain....

Hello gpevans88 and welcome to the forum :)

I am afraid I might have some bad news for you already, the components hive is way to small that what it needs to be. The hive should be around 35MB in size.

Can you please go the following location C:\Windows\System32\config and look for the following files:
-COMPONENTS
-Any other files that start with the word COMPONENTS
-Or any files that have a similar name to COMPONENTS (it could be spelt different, have a number, a symbol etc)
If you find any please create a folder on your desktop and copy and paste all these files into this folder.
Next can you please zip this folder and upload them for me to analyze? The file may be too big to attach to this post, please use either Dropbox or One Drive.

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following commands
    dir %systemroot%\System32\config >1&&notepad 1
  4. Please post the contents of the notepad file back into this thread

Alex

Thanks for the quick response - hopefully I got the Component file right this time.

And here are the contents of the notepad file as requested:

Volume in drive C is OS
Volume Serial Number is 6260-798A

Hello again,

This should be the file: 02/06/2015 09:56 PM 45,875,200 COMPONENTS

Lets see if we can get it using another program.

Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products

Navigate to C:\Windows\RegBak\{Date}\ and copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.

Now right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.

Then please upload it to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). If you have a Microsoft Account, OneDrive could be a good choice: https://onedrive.live.com/, but any other will do just fine. Make sure to set the file as publicly accessible

Hi

thanks for the further instructions. So I know precisely which file to copy now; of the available options it the only one that fits the description you described in your last post. A screenshot is included below just for to be sure, hopefully it is visible:

components.PNG

the 'date modified' in this folder for the Components file I selected matches that from that 'cmd' directory notepad file which lists [02/08/2015 06:19 PM 45,875,200 COMPONENTS] as my target so this looks OK.....

my concern is that somewhere in the copying and sending to compressed folder (the easy part) I am doing something incorrect. This is because in my last attempt when I copied ALL files labelled 'Components', that included the correct one (out of the four total altogether) but yet somehow that wasn't correct either. Each time, when I 'send to' > 'compressed folder' it creates a winrar zip folder, which I don't think should matter but i'm not entirely sure. and i just did this again and 'zipped' the correct Components file, but it seems to have a size of only 10 mb which is far off 35 mb. anyhow, then I upload it to Dropbox etc. (would OneDrive make a difference? am I failing to 'attach' the link properly?). Basically I know I grabbed the right file but I fear that again this time, something isn't quite right. What am I missing?

I tried running that REGBAK software but the folder it created did not have a Components file.

Anyway thanks a lot for your patience - hopefully what I post now works but I am highly suspicious. Any further help is greatly appreciated however if I have hit some wall here then I understand that as well.

I fear that this file might be simply identical to that of attempt # 1....in which case I don't know what to do next...very perplexed....

If the file is 10mb after compression that is alright.

We might try another method.

SFCFix script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Go to your desktop and right click on the background -> Select New -> Text Document -> Name this file SFCFixScript.txt.
  3. Open up SFCFixScript.txt and copy all of the following text inside the code box below and paste it into SFCFixScript.txt.
    Code:
    Collect::
    COMPONENTS
  4. Click on File -> Save. Close out of SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  6. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  7. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  8. SFCFix will now process the script.
  9. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  10. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

If all goes well the post should automatically attach to the post.

Something went wrong there with the upload.

Can you please try again?

I will contact the developer of SFCFix and ask him about this.

Tried it two more times just now

Hello

Just figured I'd post real quick to bump this thread. Please forgive my impatience - I am heading out of town soon and only have a small window of time should the situation
require that I do a complete system reinstall or hard drive replacement etc. I've noticed my computer continues to get slower and slower as this issue has gone on and is becoming difficult to use as the critical windows updates have not been able to be installed. If it looks like based on what I've posted here (very unsuccessfully on my part - sorry about that) that I will need to do a complete system reinstall please let me know so I can get that process moving as soon as I can. Otherwise, in the slight chance there is a specific fix out there, most definitely I would be grateful for that suggestion as that would be the easiest resolution to this issue. But, hope for the best prepare for the worst etc.

Anyway thanks for your help so far!

Sincerely,
gpevans88

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner :S, I have a lot of threads going and sometimes loose track.

The collect script didn't work, this time can you please copy the COMPONENTS hive, make sure the hive is still 45mb, then upload the hive to one drive/dropbox without compressing it? the please provide me the link.

Alex

Hello again,

Good news is I got the COMPONENTS hive and it loads. But the CBS log looks to have gone very strange.

Please run SFC /SCANNOW again and post a new CBS log.

Alex

OK great good to hear it. I ran sfc/scannow and put in the command to create the cbs txt file (I hope it doesn't matter that i have to put in that specific command string in cmd.exe itself because entering it in via Windows > Run does not create a file on the deskop) the results can be found at the link below:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mm4zod3rxm1kgl1/cbs.txt?dl=0

Thanks!

Perfect, that is the file I need :)
