Hi there,

I am trying to help a friend with their Windows 8, Hp 2000 notebook pc. The laptop had a lot of adware and toolbars and pop ups. I did a Hp recovery which was on a recovery partition. All seemed well until I tried to update Windows. It stood stuck at 0 percent for waaay to long (over 1hour). I went into the Windows update trouble shooting which found some things wrong that it fix, but it also said there's other things that are missing or corrupt (It doesn't name what specifically). I even went on Microsoft website and down loaded the fixit tool, it said the same thing.

Oh, I forgot to mention the first time I ran the trouble shooting scan and it said it fixed some thing's but couldn't fix others. I rescanned for updates and it downloaded some, but when I checked "View Installed updates" It show's all failed except the Malicious software removal tool and windows defender KB2772501. Also these 4 updates KB2871690, KB2877213, KB2891804, KB2904266. I don't understand why a system recovery by Hp to it's factory defaults did not work. I don't have Windows 8 dvd. Please someone help. I attached the CBS file your instructions say to do, had to do it with WinZip as when I right click on files and hover over send to, there's no compress to zip folder option, only the DVD drive is there.

It sounds like the system factory recovery was corrupt in some way. My suggestion, since this is a new factory recovery, I would do it again and then re-try the MS updates. Also, have you checked for any driver updates and updated the notebook as needed, including the BIOS?

Thank you for responding, I did a second recovery, but this time I went through the Hp update program and updated drivers like synaptic touch pad, Lan drivers, etc, etc. Then tried Windows update again, but same issues. But this time I left the Laptop on for a long time just idling with no downloading updates, and when I was ready to go to sleep I went to shutdown Laptop and while it was shutting down it said it was installing 106 updates, so I decided to let it update, which took all night.

By the next day, IT worked! All 106 updates was install successfully. I then continue to update until all updates was installed and THEN updated to Windows 8.1.
ALL IS WELL!! I'm so happy.

I think somehow me trying to install updates manually and leaving automatic updates ON mess things up. The way I do it with windows 7 on a fresh install, was by disabling automatic updates first, so it would not interfere with me manually updating.

Thank you anyway for trying to help.
