Windows 8 Hangs Updates

Hi,

I have a Windows 8 laptop that refuses to update anything via Windows Update or the Metro store.

I left it for over 48 hours and it got as far as downloading 98% of the windows updates but didn't do anything after that. No errors just stopped doing anything. Wasn't updating the time stamps in the C:\windows\softwaredistribution folder either.

I have stopped the services and deleted that older and restart the services and it still doesn't complete.

I have ran sfc /scannow twice, but I still can't use the Windows Update.

Have tried running Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth but it bombs out completely.

Here is a truncated version of the SFC log file, the original is over 1Gb in size. View attachment sfc.txt

Does anyone have any ideas before I reinstall the OS completely?

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Go to your desktop and right click on the background -> Select New -> Text Document -> Name this file SFCFixScript.txt.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.

Have ran windows update and am getting error 8024A000 when checking for updates. Will power cycle the laptop and see if that makes a difference.
 
Ok. If rebooting makes no difference, then can you do the following:

SFC Scan


  1. Press the Windows Key on your keyboard and X to open up the Power User Tasks Menu
  2. Click (or tap) Command Prompt (admin)
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue (approximately 15 minutes)

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

It's allowing me to check updates, have 66 to apply. I selected one, a small 37kb one, been waiting probably about 25minutes for it to download, seems stuck at 90%. Considering my broadband is running at about 50Mbs download speed it shouldn't be taking that long.

Have uploaded my WindowsUpdate.log file here http://1drv.ms/1EQQodx - I don't see any obvious errors.

Am away to run an sfc check...
 
Your Windows Update log doesn't show much on its own, so if you could let me know the results of the SFC scan that will be helpful. :)

Initial results look okay. Managed to download and install 7 updates in a blink of an eye (as you'd expect), have 77 more to download and install. Will let you know how it goes.

Many thanks for your help. Very much appreciated.
 
Managed to get 26 updates installed and now it's hanging at 7% trying to download about 60MB of updates. :(
