UPDATE: Hold on here, might have it licked.
-------------
Hello,

There is a great deal of trouble installing updates on this system. It wasn't used for a fair time and when the updates were attempted, 100 were installed. It resulted in an 'undoing changes' boot loop to which the only solution was to delete pending.xml and then system restore. This article was located: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...error-800700a1-when-installing-kb3000850.html and performed. SFCFix was used on the system (without a script). The result is included. Any assistance is greatly appreciated, as are explanations (I have moderate level of computer skill).

It was not corrected. The instructions did not remedy the patch problems, the update rollup will not install solo. I have not tried a downloadable version. I can provide the CBS logs if necessary. Please assist. Thank you.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. If you could please zip up and attach the contents of your entire c:\windows\logs\CBS folder as well as c:\windows\windowsupdate.log.

Also do you happen to have a Kodak Printer?

Thanks.

BrianDrab,

Here are the files. I do not recall a Kodak printer. Please let me know how I can further assist.

Thank you,

Ryan

I've reviewed the logs. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Check for Corruption
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Good. Now please do the following.

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

The system will not patch, these operations were attempted multiple times. StartComponentCleanup results in 14098 the half dozen times it has been attempted, with or without ResetBase. Research revealed it may be related to a patch from November, 2919355.

The system received a checkdsk/r without errors. Originally the problem was a non-ending (once for _days_) 'undoing changes' at startup that occurred repeatedly after hard power off. Pending.xml was deleted and when the system booted, and a system restore performed.

Windows 8.1u OEM media is available if needed. After the initial system restore, patches were completed in groups of 15 from the lowest numbers up, until it was narrowed down to 10, 5, 3 and one. Fifty-two and an optional (not counting a W. H. Q. L. video or SilverLight) are available today. Few beyond the update rollup were attempted and some may succeed. The computer is cheap and slow (E-Series CPU) and attempting all of the patches will take the better part of an entire day. Here is a list of the available patches.

Thank you.

Hi Corshin -

I'm having a little trouble understanding exactly what is happening. I'm assuming you are saying that if you pick any one of the updates that you previously showed that they will fail to install...is this correct?

Many of the updates listed do not install. If a StartComponentCleanup is initiated, it corrupts the store and results in error 14098. The goal is to be able to install the updates, the cleanup is not a big deal.

Thank you.

Ryan

OK, can you manually download just one of the updates that you know fails and try to install it? Assuming it fails please attach the C:\windows\windowsupdate.log afterwards. Thank you.

If you don't know where to manually download, please provide me with the KB number of the update and I'll provide you a link. Thank you.

BrianDrab,

There was an attempt at 15 updates. I did this because some that were not previously attempted and will succeed. After the fifteen, the system was rebooted and checked for updates (to add those that failed back to the queued list). Then the first few failed entries were manually installed. Some completed, the most recent attempt (KB2920189) did not.

Thanks,

Ryan

Can you provide me the make and model of your computer? Also do you know how to boot your machine into the UEFI/BIOS Settings?

The computer is an Gateway SX2110G. The firmware is accessible and has a limited number of options (e. g. Legacy Support/Secure Boot is present, AHCI/IDE is not). What do you have in mind?

Thank you,

Ryan

BrianDrab,

That is awesome. Everything is now installed successfully. Is this an ongoing problem or is Secure Boot safe to enable now?

Thank you.

Ryan
