[SOLVED] Windows 8.1 Update always fails with 80073701 (>1year)

Apologies I meant to title this thread to include the OS specifically.
"Windows 8.1 Update always fails with 80073701 (>1year)"
Moderators pleascould you update it. Thank you.

Windows update has NOT worked since buying this laptop from Currys a few years ago.
AMD E5-551 with Win8.1 Version 6.3.9600 Build 9600
Windows updates ALWAYS fail with 0x80073701 (ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING)

Annoyingly Windows never says WHICH assembly is missing.

I ahve reset the windows update components ompletely.
Restarted associated services more times.
I really need sysnatives specialist help.

Step #5 – Export/Upload CBS folder
What to do if your CBS logfiles are too large to upload

CBS.Log folder DISM logs, SFC, SFC fix logs etc have been compressed with 7zip using Ultra and the largest dictionary size in the attached archive.
Uncompressed they are 462MB.
Be warned.

Additional notes:

Event viewer always seems to show the following indication of "corruption".
Windows never says the kind, file/folder or even eumerates the types of "corruption".

Hi

Please do the following

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and type in cmd.
2.After you find the Command Prompt, right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
3. Copy and paste the following into the Command Prompt:

reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\COMPONENTS

4. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
5. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
6. Copy and paste KB2976978 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
7. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

I have blocked most of the failed updates as they were never installing and required reboots, delaying coputer restarts byhalf an hour at a time.

I used the standalone installer rather than waiting for windows to download it again.

KB4550958 optional update failed still.
KB4550961 Important update also failed.

CBS logs attached.

I have the standalone installers for KB4550958 and KB4550961 too at the ready.

Hi

Please do the following.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system with KB4550961 only.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.

Tried compressing all 11GigaBytes of the PML log overnight.
Trying to share the PML log 7zip file now on Google drive.

450MB 7zip file of the PML Logs shared to public via google drive
Warning. The uncompressed log is 11gb.
I suspect its so big because the update took AGES before it failed as I documented above.
If there is a way of targetting PML to JUST the msu file I am installing and perhaps the windows update service please let me know.
filters would save a lot fo time and disk space :)
