Windows 8.1 unable to repair system files

I have been struggling with an apparent OS file corruption problem for a while now and need some expert help

The problem started when I was unable to open movies in windows media player. An online post suggested removing windows media from the windows features and reinstalling.
When I clicked on the windows feature button I would get an empty dialog saying please wait and it would stay that way for hours until I finally killed it. Later it had a similar problem opening folders under my documents. No crash, just sits forever.

I have AVG installed and ran the scan. Also ran Malwarebytes and found nothing and ran chckdsk as well.

Searching online someone suggested running sfc /scannow so I did that. It replied that it found some corrupted files but couldn't repair them.
Reading more on the internet I found the suggestion to run dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth which I did. It would stop after a while with an error.

I next made a Windows 8.1 setup dvd in an attempt to run in repair mode. However, similar to the windows features, it would launch and say it was "getting ready" and still be in that state hours later.

Now when I run sfc /scannow it doesn't even return an error, it just sits there using 0% cpu. Running dism now stops at 40% as before.

I then found your site and downloaded SFCFix and ran it. It said something to the effect that based on what it found it would take 10-15 minutes to run. After an hour or so with no message, I gave up on it and collected the sfc and dism logs which I have attahed.

Hopefully the error messages will ring a bell.

thanks

Steve

Let's perform a Clean Boot and try to run SFC again.

Clean Boot

Configure Windows to perform a Clean Boot.
This is a troubleshooting step that will turn off other programs so they don't interfere with the update process; we can change it back once everything is working again.

  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.
  • Type msconfig in the search box, and then tap or click msconfig.
    2832179.png
  • On the Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click Disable all.
    2832144.png
  • On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click Open Task Manager
    2832180.png
  • On the Startup tab in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then click Disable.
    2832181.png
  • On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click OK, and then restart the computer.
