Windows 8.1 Pro SFC /scannow error

I have installed Windows 8.1 pro a couple times now and it keeps telling me that there are issues with SFC that cannot be resolved. I am an administrator and don't have access to certain files but get confused by the permissions in Windows. I am just trying to make the transition from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and Microsoft is not making it easy. I have done a clean install a couple times over and am thoroughly frustrated. I wanted to see if anyone is able to help me try to just figure this out.

I am trying to run this because of side by side configuration error messages when trying to run executable installers. So far, Windows 8/8.1 is nothing but a hassle.

Hello khaneliman, welcome to Sysnative!

Where did you get this disc/ISO? The fact that the problem remains over a clean install suggests that the ISO may be corrupt, or the disc damaged.

Here is the corrupt file:

I need to download a Windows 8.1 ISO to grab these files so I'll get back to you when the download has finished :)

Tom

Hi, thanks for the reply and taking a look into it. I got he ISO from Dreamspark and created a boot camp assistant drive with it. I am re downloading it as well, just to see if it might be the case of a bad download.

Hello khaneliman,

Got it!

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16537616/Fixes/SFCFix/Scripts/khaneliman/SFCFix.zip

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

I am running sfc /scannow right now. The script kept failing and my computer would act up. I then realized Avast DeepScan active protection was blocking it because it was an "unknown" script. I disabled that, ran it again, and it worked.

Yay. It told me there are no integrity violations. Thank you very much! I am going to download a new copy of my iso from dreamspark and replace the copy I had on my external hard drive.

Alternatively, you could just check the hash of the ISO you have.

The SHA1 hash should be: BC2F7FF5C91C9F0F8676E39E703085C65072139B

You're most welcome for the help :) Your SFC issue is all sorted now, so you're good to go!

Tom

No problem! I was stuck on a 2Mb/s line for years so I always think of the ways that require the least bandwidth now  I've got a 60Mb/s line now and I'm loving it!

HashTab is excellent:

HashTab tool to quickly find file hash information

Install it, right click on the ISO, then click on the File Hashes tab and it will list the various hashes of the file. I can't remember if SHA-1 is enabled by default, but if it isn't then just click on Settings and select it.

Tom

Damn, very nice internet connection. Thanks for the convenient hash tool. I love the direct integration with Windows Explorer. The only issue that I'm having currently is fan control with my retina macbook pro right now. I think that's what's causing my computer to freeze up, anyway.

Sorry to keep popping up with questions. I also wondered what all the side-by-side configuration errors I am getting are. I have been using the same executables to install my applications with Windows 7. However, since installing Windows 8, they pop up error messages. It constantly says this side-by-side configuration error message.

Uninstalled them all at once, then installed them all one by one restarting after each install. Still giving me the error message. However, when I download the files from within Windows 8 it doesn't give the error. Is it just a compatibility thing between Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 downloads?

Hi,

Can you zip up and upload this file for me please:

C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\system.evtx
