Hello,

i would like to update this Windows 8.1 installation to Windows 10. It is hosted as a VM inside Parallels Desktop 14 on a MacPro5,1 with MacOS 10.11.6.

It stops with the error 0x800f0906. Directing DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth to the source of the Windows 8.1 ISO or install.wim doesn't help either.

SFCFix log:

This is the part of CBS.log that probably shows the problem:

I'm wondering about "amd64" as this is running on Intel hardware, right?

I followed the steps you suggested. CBS.log ist attached.

Thanks! (Willing to donate! :)

Hello and welcome!

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service and just provide the link here.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put
    Code:
tags around the log to break up the text.

Afterwards, run DISM again and attach CBS.log.

Seems like it worked :)

Didn't know which tags you want around the SFCFix.txt, so i use the CODE tag around the complete log.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth worked as well.

So am i done and can i update to Windows 10 now?

Will donate as soon as you give your "Go!".

Thanks!
Karl

Please attempt the upgrade and attach C:\Windows\setuperr.log if the upgrade fails. I would recommend downloading the iso image and using it to upgrade.

Unfortunately it still can't upgrade to Windows 10.

What i did:
1. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
(with positive result)

2. Installed from Windows 10-Update-Assistent
(it quit and restored back to Windows 8.1.)

3. Restart

4. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
(with positive result)

5. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
(with positve result)

6. Downloaded, mounted and installed from Windows 10 ISO image
(it quit and restored back to Windows 8.1.)

The error message (translated from german):
Windows 10 could not be installed.
0x800F0955 - 0x20003
The installation was not successful. Within the phase SAFE_OS while doing INSTALL_UPDATES an error occured.

The file C:\Windows\setuperr.log is empty.

I attached CBS.log again and a screenshot of optional updates for Windows 8.1, that i did not install yet.

Thanks!

Well, now it worked!

I switched the user (both users have admin privileges) and i skipped the option to download all updates first. I will now attempt to install the recent updates and post the result soon.

Thanks!
Karl
