Hey everyone,

I'm usually not one to post but I'm totally out of my depth on this one. Yesterday I tried to update my .NET 4.5.1 framework to the latest version, but the installer would either hang for 4+ hours or else return an illegal character error. I tried to remedy this via Windows Update, but Update fails with Error Code 80070246. SFC /scannow fails with Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation, even after verifying that PendingDeletes and PendingRenames exist. I attempted a system refresh, but that failed as well, and no changes were made. I've run DISM StartComponentCleanup and RestoreHealth, both fail with Error: 582 an illegal character was encountered. I'm clueless with how to proceed. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello and Welcome!

DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

  1. Right-click on the Start

button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

If the zip file is larger than 8MB, please use a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.

Have you tested or replaced memory (RAM) in this machine?
