[SOLVED] Windows 7 x86 SP1 2018-03 to 2018-08 updates failing to install

I am having trouble installing windows updates on a few Windows 7 SP1 x86 machines. I have picked one problematic machine in particular, please see details below:
Updates that fail to install:

O/S: Windows 7 SP1 x86

The following updates succeed to install, but when the machine reboots the updates get to 30% complete then the machine restarts again (boot loop).
This cycle continues until I restart in safemode and roll back the update. I have tried installing them all at once and individually with the same result.

KB4103712 2018-05 - Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 for x86-based systems
KB4284867 2018-06 - Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 for x86-based systems
KB4338823 2018-07 - Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 for x86-based systems
KB4343900 2018-07 - Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x86-based systems
KB4343899 2018-08 - Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 for x86-based systems

I have followed the steps recommended to post in this forum.

sfc /scannow output - 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.'

SFCFix.exe output - 'Some detected corruptions could not be repaired automatically. You therefore need to seek the assistance of a human analyst in order to fix them'

I have also (previously) tried an upgrade the O/S using a newer Windows 7 x86 ISO that failed with the following error:
'Windows cannot install the required files. Network problems may be preventing Windows from accessing the file.
Make sure the computer is connected to the network and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070005.'

I would appreciate any help or advice you can offer :)

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.



  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put
    Code:
    tags around the log to break up the text.

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

I am still however unable to install any of the following security updates:

Is there anything else that could be preventing the updates from installing on restart?
 
Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 32-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please attach the log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also attach that along with the FRST.txt in your reply.
 
Okay, let's try resetting WU Components:

Download the following file.
Create a new folder on your Desktop.
Extract the file you've downloaded to a new folder on your Desktop you've created in the previous step.
Right-click ResetWUEng.cmd file and select Run as Administrator.
A windows will appear prompting you if you want to continue with the process. Please press Y.
Another menu will appear. Press 2: Reset Windows Update Components.
Verify that you have selected number 2 and hit Enter.
Wait until the process is complete.
You should see the message: The operation completed successfully.
Press any key to continue. . .

Close the window and reboot.

I tried using the tool in between trying to install each update.

Is there anything else that could be preventing the updates from installing on restart? Could there be missing updates required?
 
I forgot to mention that the install/rollback process takes a lot longer now for some reason. If that helps in any way to diagnose the issue.
 
I have found the issue!

Please create a system restore point and then do the following:

Open Command Prompt as Administrator and enter the following:

Code: 
[B]reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Haspnt /v ImagePath /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d C:\Windows\system32\drivers\Haspnt.sys /f [/B]

After that's done, reboot and retry updates.
