If you haven't already created a Dropbox account, please do so Here Although this procedure can be done directly through the website, it is much easier to do so via the Windows client which can be downloaded from the Dropbox website: https://www.dropbox.com/install After you have downloaded and installed that, you should now see Dropbox in your Favourites box in Windows Explorer. This is the folder that will be synchronised with the Dropbox servers, anything that you wish to back up online can be put in here, but today we will be using it to transfer files. To access your Dropbox folder, just click on the link in the top left hand corner of Windows Explorer (accessible from any location - Documents etc.). Alternatively, you can double click on the icon found in your system tray (next to the time). If you are still having issues locating this folder, unless otherwise specified, it can be found under this location: C:\Users\{Your username}\Dropbox Copy all of the following files to the Public folder in your Dropbox: C:\Windows\system32\config\components (it has no file extension) Select all files by pressing Ctrl+A then right-click and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder This will create a .zip file in your Public folder. Right-click on this file and select Copy Public Link then Paste (Ctrl+V) this link into your next post for me please Tom

Replace COMPONENTS Hive Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own. Please download the below file, components.zip and save this to your Desktop. Right-click on the file and select Extract All... Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract A window will open showing a file: components (it has no file extension) Then navigate to C:\Windows\system32\config and rename the file components to components.bak. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the components file on your Desktop into this folder. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again and when it finishes installing, attach the log to your next post please: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log Note: If, at any point, you are displayed an error saying the file is in use, or access denied, reboot and try again. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16537616/Fixes/COMPONENTS/RonB/components.zip Tom

I have inspected your COMPONENTS hive for further details on the error appearing in your CBS log and have found that it is damaged beyond repair. I attempted to perform a few fixes on the raw binary of the hive, but to no avail. A repair install should work here, so I suggest you give that a try: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...-install-windows-windows-7-windows-vista.html Tom

There's a good chance that the backup will also contain the corrupt file, but it might be worth a try if you do. If not, then I'm afraid a format and reinstall is the only way forward from here! Tom

Tom
