Hi,

I am having issues with my windows 7 sp1 on my g73-sw asus laptop.

Right the updates that still need to be installed are but fail when trying to install are:

kb3004375
kb3031432
kb3033929
kb3045999
kb3068708

(none of these updates are in the installed updates section of the control panel)

I have tried installing manually by searching for these updates in download centre and then installing but they still fail.

Watching resource monitor (ctrl shift esc then performance then resource monitor) cbs.log is using a huge amount of write/read on the hdd aswell as processes which seem to relate to trusted installer- windows update?, the named updates above and software distribution? No task manager processes are taking much cpu, ram or anything else. watching movies in vlc is becoming next to impossible due to them stuttering I guess as the laptop is busy trying to install these updates? Pc is up to date with all other updates, has avg free 2015, has had virus scan, spybot search and destroy scan and malware bytes scan.

cbs log uploaded to your servers it was 3.58gb!

Thank you. Let's fix those corrupt/missing files.

Step#1 - Fix Corrupt/Missing Files
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Ignore the Manifests folder.
  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder. If the Packages folder doesn't exist within Servicing you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages
  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, zip up and attach the following log file:
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

thanks for your help with this brian!

i re-enabled windows update and all the updates downloaded and installed fine.

However, there are still problems with vlc and other programs not running very well as there is still a process called "c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbspersist_20150619195152.log" using over 4 million bytes in resource manager on/off.

Any idea what this is?

No problem. Let's do one more check to make sure that everything looks good. The process that is writing to the CBS location is expected and is related to Windows Updates/Servicing but it shouldn't impact the performance of your machine.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.
