A problem that has persisted for about a month or so, maybe longer. It started with an optional update, but it appears to have changed to an important update. There are currently three updates that constantly fail to install, so I can't be sure which it is anymore.

The important updates that keep failing are Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3063858) and Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3068708).

The optional update that keeps failing is Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x-64-based Systems, which is very bewildering considering I don't even like or use Internet Explorer 11. It's still an eyesore though to see it hanging around the updates section though.

Now any time I try to install these updates, a big red Fail is returned to me after a long period of scanning and whatnot. Every time I turn off my laptop while it's charging, it attempts to install the bloody updates itself and ends up just turning off after a minute or two, presumably because it fails then too.

I have ran sfc/scannow, but nothing out of the ordinary was found.

I have ran SFCFix but no errors have been found. The notepad log is as follows.

SFCFix version 2.4.5.0 by niemiro.

CBS.zip is almost 50 MB. The wi-fi where I'm staying is..very bad to say the least, so I am going to try the alternative method mentioned in the Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

It's been stuck on

"Initializing installation... done!
Installing Hotfix for Windows (KB947821) (update 1 of 1)..."

for about two hours..

I'll wait a while more but the progress bar is empty, which I'm not sure is normal or not.

If it's still stuck, I personally would try to reboot the computer and try again. Maybe we'll get lucky the second time.

Yikes. Now we know why it took over 90 minutes to run. It was fixing a lot of issues and reporting on a lot more. That's a lot to fix. We'll give it a go. Don't be surprised if this next run takes a long time as well.

Step#1 - Fix Corrupt/Missing Files
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing a folder named Packages
  5. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files). If the Packages folder doesn't exist within Servicing you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages
  6. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  7. When the SURT finishes installing, zip up and attach the following log file:
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

Try the following instead.

  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Done as instructed. Strangely, I caught sight of something like "No new updates" before the application closed and produced the text file. Here it is.

Excellent. All those errors are finally fixed. Let's do a final SFC check.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

I can't do this part - copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt.

For some stupid reason the backslash symbol keeps appearing as a yen symbol in the command prompt, even if I copy paste a backslash.

You should be able to navigate to the location c:\windows\logs\cbs and then simply right-click on the CBS.log and choose copy and then right-click on your desktop and choose paste.

Then you can right-click on the CBS.log and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder) to zip it up. It's final name will be CBS.zip. You can then upload this file to SendSpace and provide the link.

Looks good. Let's try downloading one of the 3 failing updates to see if it works.

Manual Install
1. First verify that KB3063858 is still showing as needing installed.
2. If it is, please download KB3063858 and save to your desktop.
3. Install from this downloaded file.
4. If it works, great! Go ahead and install the other two (you may have to download them if they don't install through Windows Update normally).
5. If it fails, please provide me the following two logs.
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
