Hi

I have had this error for some time now and have not found any solutions for it. I was just about to try a non destructive install and thought I would do one last search and came across this site where I see at least one person has been helped out with this error code.
No updates for quite a while although windows defender seems to update itself ok.
SFC /scannow will not run either in normal or safe mode.
Your SFCfix.exe was running for 2 hours checking store directories......... then I exited.
will upload CBS.zip and anything else you require, thanks for looking

Onedrive link cbs.zip

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. You have corruption within your COMPONENTS hive. Please do the following.

1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config\ and copy the COMPONENTS file to your desktop.
Note: If you get a message that the file is in use, then reboot your computer and try again.
2. Zip up the COMPONENTS file and upload to OneDrive and provide a link.

Thank you.

OK, I've fixed several corruptions but I'm fairly certain there are more. This is likely going to take a few fixes to get this working. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Replace Components Hive Manually
1. Download COMPONENTSNEW.ZIP and save to your desktop.
2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
3. Now we have the COMPONENTS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
5. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select rename. Rename it to COMPONENTS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
6. Take the file from the ComponentsNew folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

If you are able to successfully do Step#1 then please continue.

Step#2 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

OK, fixed 5. 9 Left. I need to get a new copy of your COMPONENTS hive since it has changed now. Please go back to C:\Windows\System32\Config and copy the COMPONENTS file to your desktop. Zip and send. Please ensure that you send me your most current one.

Thank you.

Thank you. Here is round#2 of registry fixes. Please do the following. Take care to ensure the steps are followed exactly. Thank you.

4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
5. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select rename. Rename it to COMPONENTS.bad2.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
6. Take the file from the ComponentsNew2 folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

If you are able to successfully do Step#1 then please continue.

Step#2 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.

Getting there but they are getting much more difficult. Please do the following.

  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please. Please do this BEFORE doing Step#2 as it will overwrite this file.

2. If you did this correctly you will see a Windows Update Standalone Installer window come up and it will search for the update. We are down to the last two which are the most difficult. In the meantime go ahead and try Windows Update. Let me know how it goes.

Ok 149 updates later and lost count of number reboots, just down to 12 that are failing, tried as job lot then individually from earliest (dating fro m may 2014 )and no luck, all failing with error code 800736B3

So big improvement over none at all. could these few be down to the last couple of errors? jpg of failing updates:

Sure could be related. I'm happy you were able to start getting updates though. Now that a bunch of updates have installed I'd like to get fresh logs please.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)

Step#2 - SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each
    sfc /scannow
Wait for this to finish before you continue
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Perfect, thanks. Here's what we need to do next.

1. Download KB2871997 to your desktop. This is one of the updates that is failing. We will be using this downloaded file to fix your next issue.
2. Please try to install this downloaded file.
3. If it fails, please zip and send me your C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log file. Make sure you copy it to your desktop just like in the previous step and it's OK to overwrite any that are already on your desktop.
