Hi guys, I've got a Win 7 .7601, x64 PC that can't check for updates since 7/13/19. I've run all the pre-reqs, SURT, SFC & SFCFix. CBS log files. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks!

CBS.log. Updates failed with 80072EE2. Yes, the Windows clock and time zone are correct. I checked it a few times earlier and synced it with Windows time a few times as well.
Forgot to attach the SFC Fix log file

It looks like the log is incomplete. Please provide the most recent CBSPersist log.

What AV/FW are you using?
Are you getting updates through WSUS or directly from MS?

There are no CBSPersist logs, only the CBSPersist.CAB files.

Avast antivirus. I uninstalled it earlier, tried the updates again, then reinstalled it after the updates failed. Updates are direct from MS, this is a Workgroup PC

Clean as a whistle.

Farbar Service Scanner
1. Download Farbar Service Scanner from here, and move it to the Desktop
2. Right-click on FSS.exe > Run as Administrator
3. Checkmark everything, and click Scan

4. Once it finishes, Notepad will open FSS.txt on your Desktop. Copy and paste everything in it in your next reply

Looks okay.

Let's check the registry:

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Afterwards, please retry updates and if they fail, attach C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log.

Fixlog is below. I already tried creating a Windows update key in the registry earlier (there wasn't one), but there was no change when trying to run updates.
Windows update failed again and here is the Windows update log.

Restart Windows in Safe Mode w/networking.

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable

  • Extract the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to c:\Windows\TEMP the zip will extract to a folder called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
  • Execute the file Repair_Windows.exe from the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder, accept the Security warning and the EULA
  • Click the button Jump To Repairs
  • Click the Open Repairs button to access the following screen:
    WindowsRepair.png
  • Click the box All Repairs to uncheck all the boxes
  • Check only the following boxes:
    • 16 - Repair Windows Updates
  • Check the box Restart/Shutdown System When Finished > Restart System
  • Click the Start Repairs button
  • When the system reboots, attempt the update again.

I am off for the night. It's very late. Good night.

I appreciate your help, Softwaremaniac! I ran the repairs above and windows update still fails, with error code 80072EE2

How are you connected to the internet? Wirelessly or wired?

Can you try another method?

Are your network drivers up-to-date?

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right-click FRST64.exe and click Run as Administrator to run it as administrator. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already checked).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please attach the log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also attach that along with the FRST.txt in your reply.

This is a desktop PC and it's hard wired. I installed every bit of this network about 6 months ago and tested everything with Fluke meters. It runs flawlessly at 700Mbps and there's no indication of packet loss or connection errors anywhere else.
Network drivers are up to date as far as the MS database is concerned. I'd have to dig for the NIC model to check any further.
There is a Hamachi VPN connection, but I've disabled it more than once when trying to check for updates and it made no difference.

I haven't tried to download any standalone updates since I don't know what the PC needs. I could try and find some current updates tomorrow and manually install them and see what happens, but that doesn't resolve Windows ability to automatically update the system.
I appreciate your help, but I was hoping someone would be able to find an answer in the logs as to where the problem is. I don't want to keep throwing random ideas out just to see what sticks.

The only errors I have seen thus far are these:

The things I'm trying here are not random. I'm trying them because they've worked before. :-)

Please hold off on manual updating then until we dig deeper:

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.
i3yiUac.png

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.

Thanks for your help, Softwaremaniac. I resolved the problem by changing DNS servers.
