Hello Sysnative

Someone have asked me for help to fix their Acer laptop, because Internet Explorer wont install or work.
It i currently running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit.

When i try to update the machine, so i can install the godless browser known as Internet Explorer. It throws out 2 errors, which is #80070490 and #64C. I've tried to repair the system with a windows disk, and countless other methods from Microsoft sites, like System Update Readiness Tool, sfc /scannow, clearing the temp folder, and the like but to no avail.

I have 8 updates in total that wont be installed, which is:

KB2574819
KB2592687
KB2830477
KB2977218
KB3004375
KB3021952
KB3023562
KB3031432

I've seen that you need a few logs and the like from the other posts on the forum.
I have attached what i have managed to collect myself in this Skydrive:

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=A8CFD4482A5E393C!628

Please notice that some of it unfortunately is in my native tongue.

I hope that somebody is able to help me ^^

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Thank you for providing all that information, it makes things a lot easier for me to get an understanding as to what is going on :)

To take a further look into this can you please follow the below instructions for SURT?

Please follow the instructions Here to run the System Update Readiness Tool. When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Hello again

SURT did not find any errors unfortunately. With this error it can a few things causing the issue. What I would like you to do is to run Windows Update again, let it fail. Then provided the two following logs. The reason why I am asking for this is to get the exact timestamps in each log to determine when this error occurred.

Convert CBS.log to CBS.txt

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button => Inside the search box copy and paste the following command:
    Code:
    cmd /c copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  2. Press Enter
  3. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Windows Update Log

  1. Click on the Start button -> Inside the search box copy and paste the following command
    cmd /c copy %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\WindowsUpdate.txt"
  2. Please go to your desktop and attach WindowsUpdate.txt to your next post

Good work, you did it perfectly!

I believe we have an issue with this key Package_26_for_KB2574819~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.7, it is either inside the registry (most likely and more complex to fix) or an issue with the actual file. Before we start diffing through the registry lets check the integrity of the files.

We have a lot of errors here referring to KB3004394.

Can you please uninstall this update from add/remove programs? This update was pulled by MS last year due to bugs.

Hello again

I've removed KB3004394 and tried to update again, and some updates went though YAY. But i still have 8 updates that won't install, and throws the #64C and #80070490 errors.

I've uploaded a bunch of new logs to my Onedrive:

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=A8CFD4482A5E393C!656

Here's a list of the updates that fail to install:

KB2574829
KB2592687
KB2830477
KB2977218
KB3004375
KB3021952
KB3023562
KB3031432

Hope that is everything you need :)

Thank you, I think we should try to clear out the WU cache before trying again.

Software Distribution rename

  • Click Start -> Type in CMD in the search -> Right click on cmd.exe and choose Run as Administrator
  • Entre in the following commands:
    net stop wuauserv
    ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download DL.bak
    ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DS.bak
    net start wuauserv

Once completed please try and run windows update again.

Please try Widows update again, if it fails please upload a new CBS log and upload it to OneDrive. After this has been done can you please run a new scan with SFC /SCANNOW and upload another cbs.log file. You should end up with two CBS files at the end. One before and one after.

Alex
