Windows 7 Updates are not working for Windows Update and Windows Defender. This is Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit.

Windows Update “Check for updates” fails. Error: Windows could not search for new updates. Error(s) found: Code 80072EFE Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Windows Defender “Check for updates now” fails. Definition updates were found on the Microsoft Security Portal then it stops with the following Update Status: The program can’t install definition updates. Error found: 0x800b0109. A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) is not installed since it failed initially and was not resolved as to why it was failing. Installation status: Failed - Error details: Code 800F0A12. Not sure if this as anything to do with this issue; I just thought it was an important piece of information.

I have done a lot of searching on the internet and still could not find any resolution; I need help. Thank you.

Steps I have taken to try to resolve this:

1) sfc /scannow and no errors.

2) chkdsk /f and no errors.

3) WindowsUpdateDiagnostic tool and Problem Found: Windows Update error 0x80070057(2021-01-28-T-11_23_12P) Not Fixed

4) System Readiness Tool (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86) and Errors from CheckSUR.log excerpt: (also in zip folder attached as per instructions #5)

Hello and welcome,

Provide the Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Filedropper or SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

Hello,

Thank you for the greeting and detailed response!

I have been working on this issue for the past few days and it was finally resolved. It seems the timing of the resolution coincided with your post. I was in the process of composing a status when I saw your post. I apologize for any inconvenience. I appreciate all you have done.

There were several issues. The main problem was the initial installation failure of Windows 7 Service Pack 1. I believe it caused further complications. Once Win7 SP1 was installed successfully, Windows Update and Windows Defender were able to successfully update. Then the subsequent Windows Updates were installed, which was very time consuming.

WindowsUpdateDiagnostic is no longer reporting an error.

Apparently a prior installation of Avast left behind some files after it was uninstalled. avastclear, Avast Software Uninstall Utility, did not remove those residual files. I removed those files myself.

System Readiness Tool and SFCFix are no longer reporting those results.

Thank you for your time.

No problem. I will mark this thread as solved.

Take care.
