So I was trying to upgrade win 7 to win 10 via media creation tool. Unfortunately it crashed with error code 0xC1900101 - 0x30017. "The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation.".

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

I tried the upgrade again by unplugging the Webcam, the speakers and the wifi adapter. Unfortunately it was not successful and I got the same message as before. Also the initial blue screen (as before) stated "SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDED". It seems to stall when installing at 74% for 10 minutes.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

This is a new Samsung Evo SSD (July/August 2019). I cloned it using Samsung Magician and at the the time I cloned it all but one last partition which had a linux OS wasn't cloned. I didn't mind saving that last partition. I have also recently updated the SSD's firmware and optimized it using Samsung software. Lately I have noticed some odd messages from windows when I double click on an image file, specifically "The directory name is invalid". I am able to open the file with any image viewer except for an old program that I have called d'peg. Also I have tried to copy and paste the files to another partition and I get a message stating that "Could not find this item... This is no longer located in .......Verify this item's location and try again." The GSmartControl test didn't show any errors.

Just Windows 7 Ultimate. Like I said the Linux OS in that partition was never cloned so I don't have it in the SSD. At least I don't think so.

It happens when it reboots and it says on the screen something like working on updates. At which point I leave to do something else and I leave the screen at about 27% done. When I come back I see the BSOD.

That's because your network is working, please detach the network cable, so it can't update and let me know whether you can upgrade from the ISO directly.
