Windows 7 strange days: registry restored from prehistoric backup?

Hi,

I'm getting funny behaviour from my notebook.

It's a windows 7 64bits, I think without SP1 (not sure, because probably the registry is "lying": read ahead).
tl;dr: it appears as if the "start-up repair" has restored a registry from 2014; I hope it is fixable.

Recently, I could only start the PC in safe mode because in normal mode it was getting stuck at the splash screen, right after having inserted the password (same behaviour for both the two user profiles on my machine).

Since a clean shutdown was also impossible (the machine would be stuck at the "turning off" splash screen), I had to turn it off lots of times, by long-pressing the power button, until at some point windows was complaining that a registry file could not be loaded.
Then, by turning off and on once again, finally the restore screen came up and performed a start-up repair.

Although after that the system have been booting in normal mode, the devices panel contained a lots of devices with an exclamation marks:
I've removed all those I manage to (more on that in a bit) and reinstalled all the drivers, until I finally got to a decent point (i.e.: video adapter working, wi-fi card connecting to the network, etc.).

At this stage, though, I've noticed that
1. my antivirus (Kaspersky) crashes when I open it (and it doesn't start automatically);
2. Although I am connected to the network (it doesn't matter whether via WiFi or LAN), Internet doesn't work;
3. While trying to remove/reinstall Kaspersky, I've noticed that in fact Kaspersky is not present in the list of installed applications while Avira (the AV I used to have up to 2014 when I've switched to Kaspersky) is... Remember that I cannot remove some peripherals? Well, they are Avira's network peripherals... Obviously, Avira is not installed anymore since 2014...
4. at the start-up I keep seeing the list of files being loaded, like you see when loading in safe mode, although it is working in normal mode.
5. some apps (e.g.: comodo icedragon browser) also do not start.
6. sfc /scannow reports files that cannot be repaired.

So, my impression is that the "start-up repair" process has somehow resuscitated a really old registry files... Unfortunately, I do not have any restore point nor restore disk. My only hope is that somewhere I still have a more recent copy of the registry: would it be possible?

Any advice? Would installing the SP1 fix the files that SFC cannot fix?
Thanks in advance

Bests

I did a bit of searching and SP1 was released to the public in Feb. 2011. In March 2013, it was pushed out to computers still not having it because support for Win 7 without SP1 was ending in April 2013.

It would be unusual for a Win 7 computer showing a 2014 date not to have SP1.

When you right click Computer and select Properties, does it show Service Pack 1 about the 3rd line down?

Then in 2016, MS released a convenience rollup that has all the updates through April 2016.

At this point, I'm not sure what is your best course of action. Forcing a shut down via the power button tends to corrupt files.

If you think the 2014 restore is good, then perhaps installing the convenience rollup through April 2016 would help get it more up to date quicker than waiting to run Windows update and sitting through more than 4 years of updates.

I'll give my standard lecture: please spend some time and learn how to create images. We have 4 computers running Windows 7 in the house. I make images about every 4 to 6 weeks of all of them. This has saved me lots of time and headaches over the years. When something strange happens, I restore an image and the most I'd have to do is usually 6 weeks of updates to programs and security. I do keep a running list of what was updated since the last image so I know what I need to update.

In the south of Italy, where I come from, we have an old saying: "the cobbler walks in broken shoes":
unfortunately, it's been my job, as IT support, to do images and even registry backups on other people's PCs but for mine I never have time... I know, shame on me!!
And of course I know that forcing the shut down corrupts files and it's obvious that for me it's the last resort!

As for the Service Pack, it might be possible that I haven't deployed it until strictly necessary because I had some software that was incompatible with it. So for me it is very likely that in 2014 it hadn't been installed yet.

If you've read my whole post, though, you'll se that I do not think that the 2014 restore is good, otherwise I wouldn't have written the post in the first place...

Hi,

sounds like its picked up the Last Known Good configuration - if your System restore option was turned off/corrupt this is then the default
note its not automatically dated

Certainly would explain why no longer used programs are appearing, and "current" ones fail to work, and your internet non-connection.

SP1, KB976932, was a significant upgrade that affected lots of core programs. It also had pre-requesets.

your best option a Repair Install - NO loss of personal data/files.
I would remove Avira first - use their removal tool in Safe Mode

W7 has a Compatability mode so you can run "out of date" programs based on older platforms.

What about registry copies? Are there more than one?
