Windows update downloads the updates, installs them, than come back with a failure error code 80070308.
Running the windows update diagnostic it comes back with error 0x80070057.
When the computer is shutdown it gives the message Do not shutdown or unplug the computer and it installs the updates.
When the computer is restarted it also says it is installing the updates, but when Win updates is run the same updates reappear.

The following was tried:
Windows update diagnostic it comes back with error 0x80070057.

Ran MSfixit says it is fixed, it isn't.

Did a clean boot, same problem.

Renamed SoftwareDistribution file, same problem.

Ran SFCFix it found no problem, but it does the same thing.

    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Alright, now you can try to install the Windows Updates. If they fail, please upload the two following files for me.

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

Can you upload the following file for me?

C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml

Alright, follow the instructions below please.
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select

  • Enter the following command: DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions
  • Once done, post here what message is returned, then restart your computer;

Try this command instead:

DISM /online /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

It seems like you'll have to launch that command from the Recovery Environment of Windows 7 in order for it to work.

From there, open the command prompt (last option) and enter the first command:

DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

    • REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
    • REG DELETE HKLM\COMPONENTS /V PendingRequired
  • Once done, restart your computer;
  • Try to install the Windows Updates again;
If the Windows Updates fail, upload the following files for me to review.
  • C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
