Hi,

I have a machine in which I am struggling to update to SP1

I have run KB947821-v34-x64.msu and obtained Checksur.log as follows

Code:

I did have two corruptions previously, in which I followed these instructions How to fix Server Manager Errors after installing updates (HRESULT:0x800F0818 / HRESULT:0x800B0100) – Microsoft GTSC Romania – Enterprise Platforms Support
- This resulted in now only one error, of which is "CBS MUM Corrupt 0x00000000 servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Security-WindowsActivationTechnologies-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7.1.7600.16395.mum Expected file name Package_for_KB978601~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.0.mum does not match the actual file name" ... progress, but I am not sure what I have named wrong

There are 5 unavailable repair files. So, I ran SFCFix.exe and input the files into SFCScript.txt and obtained the following Trace:: results

Thus I renamed update.mum to Microsoft-Windows-Security-WindowsActivationTechnologies-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7.1.7600.16395.mum
and update.cat to Microsoft-Windows-Security-WindowsActivationTechnologies-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7.1.7600.16395.cat

I think this left only the single error on the 'Checking Package Manifests and Catalogs' section that I have now.

I think I should check for some help, before I do something wrong!!

Could anyone kindly advise?

Many thanks in advance,
John

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Before we begin, may I ask you if you intend on updating to the free (until the end of this month) Windows 10?

Hi Brian,

Thank you for you welcome. ... You are the 2nd person that has mentioned the Windows 10 offer. I have now reviewed the system, but require to run SolidWorks 2016, which is a £6500 software package for 3D CAD/CAM. ... I am a bit of a traditionalist, and hung onto XP as long as I could, and also planned to do the same with Windows 7

However, I think I could risk it on this machine, so long as I dont lose the installed data and profiles. The main reason I dont want to fresh install is that this is my main business machine, and re-installing the masses of software I have would be a major pain.

I have two identical spec machines, for redundancy purposes, so I think I would like to try to keep Windows 7. However, I am guessing that you are speculating that the Windows 10 upgrade would be easier that the repair? ... In this case, does Windows 10 basically just provide a GUI update to Windows 7 architecture? The Windows 10 offer is tempting, if I can leave my Thunderbird profiles and other installed software in place?

I only ask as it is likely the easiest and quickest way to repair your machine. We could attempt to fix Windows 7 but it may take quite awhile. Just giving you the option. Windows 8 was horrible, 8.1 was better and in my opinion they finally got it right with Windows 10. There are many under the hood changes but from an end user perspective there are only a few small things to get used to in the UI. Other than that it's definitely a better and more secure OS.

Keep in mind, once you upgrade to Windows 10, if you don't like it, you have 30 days to be able to roll back to Windows 7. In all cases all of your programs and data will be intact. However, always make sure you have a backup as unforeseen things can happen. I can tell you that I've upgraded over 100 machines and for the ones that did upgrade (some just wouldn't) I never had an major issue. The only minor annoyance on some of them is that I would have to run the Windows 10 install a second time to fix some issues that happened during the upgrade (like the start button not working or the search not functioning).

Let me know what you prefer.

Brian,

The issue is important for my business, and the requirement is to update to SP1 on the Windows 7 machine.

I have an identical machine, so I have decided to clone the OS, so that I have two machines both with the same issue as clones.
- I would like to then attempt the replacement / repair of system files and manifests, if which I am confident that although lengthy, I can undertake.

If the attempt is successful, I will either undertake same process on the 2nd clone machine, or if time, then update the clone to Windows 10 in order to test its stability and usefulness in the work I undertake.
- It might be possible with the cloning method, to actually try a Windows 10 install on the clone machine, and I hope to start cloning later today.
- Easus ToDo Backup seems to be suitable for this procedure Clone Windows 7 Hard Drive with Windows 7 Cloning Software - EaseUS

Brian, would you or any other user of this forum be willing to walk me through the repair sequence, in which I can undertake.

Brian, I have just tried to run the manual SP1 file "windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe" as I did previously, but now I am getting a new message. I hope it is not because of my tinkering previously, the new message reads
Error: ERROR_APP_WRONG_OS(Ox8007047f)

I can assure you, that my OS is x64 on an Intel i5 and that this installer worked without this error but instead the 0x800b0100 error previously.
- The only changes I made previously were the "update.cat" file and "update.mum" file which I extracted from KB978601 and renamed to the following
Code:
(f) CBS MUM Corrupt 0x800F0900 servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Security-WindowsActivationTechnologies-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7.1.7600.16395.mum Line 1:
(f) CBS Catalog Corrupt 0x800B0100 servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Security-WindowsActivationTechnologies-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7.1.7600.16395.cat

I would be happy, if you or someone here is, to attempt the steps for repair?

Kind regards,
John

Brian, I am glad that you relish, as I, a challenge!

Unfortunately System Restore was turned off due to low storage space. I will increase the partition size, and enable it now. However, unfortunately there is no option to use restore to roll back to prior to the tinkering of system files.
- However, only the 2 files I mentioned were replaced

I wish I had had the presence of mind to make a backup of the C:\Windows\servicing folder before I overwrote them. ... I just checked, and I had not unfortunately made a backup of the files. Apologies!

I do indeed like a challenge. If you don't mind I need a fresh log to begin. Please do the following.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Please start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator

CheckSUR.log is located here Dropbox - CheckSUR.log

Brian,

I used the offline SP1 installer as I already had this downloaded.

The SP1 installation went flawlessly, and the PC is working marvellously right now.

SP1 has allowed me to installed the software update that is required for my main business software, SolidWorks, of which I paid £6500 for a single software licence!

Solidworks now runs on the machine, and I am using this currently to undertake invoicable work - at last, using the latests software.

... I am glad that I made the decision to continue with Windows 7, as it is very important for stability and I require low system resources to undertake my engineering design work.

I usually make a clone of the machine, so that one is running at all times, as its essential for my business. Hence I have two identical machines, and backup the drive.

Now everything is working, I will make a back-up and hopefully have no issues that will effect my business's workflow.

This issue has been in a thorn in my side, I can tell you. So I cant thank you and your associates on this website enough.

How I long for the days, when I used to understand every aspect of my computer. ... Back in the day, I had an Atari ST which had a GUI and OS built into 256k ROM chips. So the system always worked!
- Anything like a 'service' or background task was placed in a 'auto folder' - basically a folder on root drive, called 'Auto'. So you knew what was running.

PC's seem to be overcomplex these days, and even Linux seems to have gone the same way. Oh for the simple days!

Many many thanks, once again!
