[SOLVED] Windows 7 SP1 Corrupt Files blocking Windows Update

So Windows 7 on my Dad's HP Pavilion Laptop got infected with a rootkit and was removed by me. Since he was vacationing at the time of the infection, he brought it to a mom and pop computer repair store and they incorrectly diagnosed a bad hard drive. They replaced the hard drive and that helped for a few days before the infection came back.

I posted a topic over at bleeping computer forums for help and they eventually sent me here. They think it may have to do with the new hard driver and needing a generic driver. The topic and steps taken can be found at Exploit.Dropper.GSA Virus removed but system files infected? - Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs

Ran sfc command and it said there was corruption. Ran SFCFix but it could not connect to the servers and came back all clear. CBS Log file is attached. Also attached the windows update error.

SFCFix output:

SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2018-03-07 11:25:02.847
Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - amd64
Not using a script file.

Hello and welcome!

Okay, let's try resetting WU Components:

Download the following file.
Create a new folder on your Desktop.
Extract the file you've downloaded to a new folder on your Desktop you've created in the previous step.
Right-click ResetWUEng.cmd file and select Run as Administrator.
A windows will appear prompting you if you want to continue with the process. Please press Y.
Another menu will appear. Press 2: Reset Windows Update Components.
Verify that you have selected number 2 and hit Enter.
Wait until the process is complete.
You should see the message: The operation completed successfully.
Press any key to continue. . .

Close the window and reboot.

Does Windows Update work now?

Thanks for the welcome Software Maniac. Followed your steps and Windows Update still does not work after the restart. Same error about services not started as in the PDF I attached to my first message. Appreciate your help and hope we can try other steps.

Bob

Sorry but could not run SURT. When installing, got error message "Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247." Going to bed now and will check back tomorrow.

Bob

No problem.

Disable Automatic Updates:
Click Start > Control Panel > Security > Windows Update > Change Settings.
Select "Never check for updates" in the list.

Reboot the machine and undo the change above.
Does that fix the issue with Windows Updates ?

Software Maniac,

After I changed the windows update setting back after the reboot, when I hit the "check for updates" button, nothing happens. The screen just seems to refresh with the same information.

It seems like i cannot change any Windows features. The Windows Defender service is stopped due to an error. When I try to start it, it just gets hung up and never completes. In the past have gotten messages like "Reverting changes to Windows, Could not configure Windows Features". Hope that helps shed some more light on the problem.

Farbar Service Scanner

2. Right-click on FSS.exe > Run as Administrator
3. Checkmark everything, and click Scan
KUTc3I2.png
4. Once it finishes, Notepad will open FSS.txt on your Desktop. Copy and paste everything in it in your next reply

Here is the FSS.txt file. Hope it helps.

There was an error as soon as I started it. It said "Installer encountered an error: 0x800070490 Element not found." Thanks for your time by the way.

Tried running SURT after a clean boot and still get the 0xc8000247 error from installer. Want me to try it after a safe boot?

It did not find any updates for me. Here is the detailed report.
