For an extended period of time "Security Monthly Quality Rollup" updates and occasional other updates have failed. Most recent attempt resulted in error code 80004005. Previously searched for solutions several months ago, but nothing worked.

Here is a link to CBS.zip Dropbox - CBS.zip

Thank you, Kris

Hello and welcome!

Remove Update Manually
1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:4015549

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

Thank you for your help. I received the following error, "Installer encountered an error: 0x80004005" "Unspecified error"

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and choose Control Panel.
2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
3. Select the Programs group.
4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Windows Features dialog. Wait until this dialog populates with information. If this does not happen for some reason, please continue with the steps anyway.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps.
5. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
6. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
7. Copy and paste
KB4015549 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
8. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.
9. You may close any remaining open windows now.

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Extract it.
4. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
5. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
6. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.
7. Try updates and if any fail, attach CBS.log.

Dropbox - CBS.log - This is the log from my desktop with a time stamp from a couple of days ago. I found another in the Windows folder, but it wouldn't allow access for uploading or viewing and I can't figure out how to change that. The time stamp was from a few minutes ago.

The updates that failed are:

Optional: Hewlett-Packard - USB - 5/3/2017 12:00:00 AM - 40.11.1130.17123
2018-07 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4338818) - This one isn't being offered again for processing in Windows Update

What is it that you would like me to do? The only remaining update is optional and is from HP and I would advise against installing that. Unless you have problems printing, don't touch the driver you currently have installed. In case of problems printing, only use the official manufacturer site and not Windows Update for driver updates.

What about the other failed update, KB4338818. Is that one no longer needed? I just want to make sure I'm not missing something, so reaching out.

Oh, KB4338818 is listed under important? Strange, But if so, please attempt it and when it fails, attach CBS.log.
kB4338818 shows as failed, but is not available in Windows Update to try and install again. What does that mean? Is there something else i should do?

That is what I expected. Back in September 2016 MS have introduced a Quality Rollup system of updates, which means that once you install the September update you no longer need the previous ones and that's why the update is no longer needed. It was superseded. Let me know if there's something unclear at this point.

I think that we have solved the issue.
