I have tried several times to upgrade a Windows 7 desktop (i5, 8 GB RAM, 2 x 1TB drives in RAID 0) to Windows 10 but on first reboot it asks me to choose a keyboard layout and then only gives options "Troubleshoot" or "Turn off your PC". After restarting it allows me to log into Windows 7 and then shows the message below in a popup. I have tried uninstalling the network driver as suggested on another site, I've unplugged all hardware except for keyboard and mouse. I've tried the upgrade from a flash drive and have also tried mounting the ISO and launching from that. I've ran CHKDSK and found no errors, I've ran sfc /scannow and found nothing wrong. I've tried using Windows 10 version 1809, 1909, and now 2004.

We couldn't install Windows 10
We've set your PC back to the way it was right before you started installing Windows 10.

0xC1900101 - 0x20017
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation

Hello and welcome!

Please do the following:

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right-click FRST64.exe and click Run as Administrator to run it as administrator. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already checked).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please attach the log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also attach that along with the FRST.txt in your reply.

I suspected that, but another source said that hardware RAID should just work and the OS didn't see or care that it was even there. Should I get a new RAID controller or is it just the drivers that need to be replaced?

In my original message I meant to say the two drives were RAID 1 not RAID 0 (they're mirrored).

The RAID controller is a Highpoint RocketRAID 1720

I'd recommend backing up your system prior to running this just in case.

Uninstall this:

HighPoint Web RAID Management Service

And then run the following:

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Windows rebooted and has come to a black & white Windows Error Recovery screen.

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose Start windows Normally.

Launch Startup Repair (recommended)
Start windows Normally

Update: Tried to start "normally" but computer just reboots and comes back to this screen.

Ok. Cannot get past the Windows Error Recovery Screen. I did a full backup with AOMEI before we started. Hopefully that's not too difficult to work with. :)

I would appreciate any suggestions to get back to a running state. I tried a Windows 7 boot disk but it doesn't see my installation so it doesn't see any restore points... The AOLEI boot disk I made earlier to restore from my backup image just locks up when the UI loads. Checking with their support and trying to recreate a boot disk on another computer...

Unfortunately, I do not have experience with AOMEI, so their support is your best bet. I'm an Acronis and Veeam user.

It might be worth also checking the HDD in the machine.

Hard Drive (HDD) Diagnostics (Sea Tools for DOS) & SSD Test

If all else fails, try running this:

Open notepad. Please copy the contents of the quote box below. To do this highlight the contents of the box and right click on it and select copy. Paste this into the open notepad. Save it on the flash drive as fixlist.txt

RestoreQuarantine:

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to the operating system

Now please enter System Recovery Environment Command Prompt.

Run FRST/FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will generate a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt) please post it in your reply.

Sorry, I'm not following you. I can't open notepad. The computer no longer boots past the Windows Error Recovery screen. Neither Launch Startup Repair nor Start Windows Normally will work.

Windows 7 boot media does not see the Windows install on the hard drives.
My backup image is inaccessible, and even if I can get to it I think I now have to re-install the entire image since I don't know which files to restore or if simply copying them back into the windows folder will get it working again...

:(

Sorry, I don't know what notepad you want me to use.

I'm unable to get to any prompt. I've tried Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last Known Good Configuration. I had a Windows 7 installation media on flash but it just stopped working too. Going to reflash it if I can find my ISO.

If i can access the drive with a Linux boot disk can I manually copy the missing files from a backup?

I was somehow able to get things going again. I tried so many things I couldn't list them from memory, but a startup repair worked after manually copying one of the driver files to Windows\System32\DRIVERS. I really didn't think it was going to work but the thing came to life on the next reboot.

I ran your FRST64 with the fixlist.txt that contained only RestoreQuarantine:

Thank you for all your help. I think the next step for me is to upgrade the raid controller to something compatible with windows 10. Hopefully you're correct and that is what's holding back the upgrade.
