I have the dreaded 0x800F0900 Windows Update error on a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit machine. I've tried:

SFC /scannow
Windows Update Readiness Tool
Deleted all files in SoftwareDistribution
Ran several malware scanners w/ no infections found

I'm stuck at this point and really don't want to perform a clean install of the OS if possible.

Attached are the log files CBS, CheckSUR and CheckSUR.persist

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks!!

I should have read the posting instructions more carefully for Windows Update errors. I ran the SFCFix provided by the site and the machine is now installing 98 Windows Updates, but the SFCFix log file shows some of the corruption was not repaired.

I've attached that file as well and I'll post back the results of a clean SFC /scannow once the updates complete and I reboot.

Excellent tool by the way...wish I would have found this 3 hours ago.

Cheers

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Lets get started on repairing the corrupt files here. This will take two parts as I don't have the time right now to create a second fix.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC /SCANNOW

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with the rest of the steps.
  • Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  • When the SURT finishes please continue..

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this to your next post please.
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or One Drive

Thanks

Alex

Hello:

The issue is now resolved and I appreciate the help. The SFCFix utility solved the issue.

Thank you

Hello,

I am glad your PC is running better, but there are still some files that need repairing. Can you please re run the above scans of SURT and SFC /SCANNOW please?

Thanks

Alex

You are correct, it is still broken. The CBS.zip file is 44MB, so in order for you to access it via dropbox:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/3suobq8lvpy07of/AACTubU6UJIvrWXgzpo1W9rGa?dl=0

Code:
SFCFix version 2.4.1.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2014-12-10 14:20:55.016
Using .zip script file at C:\Users\administrator.HQ\Desktop\SFCFix.zip [0]
Not using an additional text script file.

AutoAnalysis::

AutoAnalysis:: directive completed successfully.

There is still a number of corrupt files. I have most of the ones from the SURT log ready to fix.

Can you please run SFCFix by double clicking on it? I am hoping for a list of corrupt files will be generated.
