Hi,

I have been unable to fix corrupted fde.dll, fdeploy.dll, gpedit.dll and gptext.dll files.

SFC /scannow reported the errors.

SFCFix still reports that those files have been corrupted.

A Windows repair attempt couldn't locate replacement files.

Here is the latest log from SFCFix:

Not yet.

Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log.
  1. Download SURT for your system. (Windows 7 SP1 x64)
  2. Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go through the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes).
  3. On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log.
  4. Attach this log in your next reply.
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

Hmmm. Doesn't look good. :-(

Is AVG still installed and if so, which version ?
I need to have a look at the COMPONENTS hive.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

Neither of the options mentioned above would let me copy the COMPONENTS file to the desktop.

So I connected the drive through USB to another computer.

From there, I used the Security tab to change the permissions on the file.

That allowed me to copy it, and pack it into a zip file.

It has been uploaded here.

P.S. I changed the permissions of the COMPONENTS file back, and put the drive into the original (laptop) computer, and it booted fine.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the information about AVG.

It is software version 19.3.3084 (build 19.3.4241.440), UI version 1.0.152.

Step 1:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2:
Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log in your next reply.

FRST64.exe?

Should I download it from the bleeping computer web site?

They say it's used for checking for malware.

Great.
Check Windows Update again and report the result.
If it fails, run sfc /scannow again and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

But I think I also have a bunch of hidden updates. Should I restore them?

If so, which ones do I need?

45333

Why are these updates hidden ?

The NVIDIA driver is just plain bad. It drags my system down. I had to roll back the driver. Even the newest drivers from NVIDIA for my graphics card are awful. A couple of weeks ago, I updated to the newest driver and my system couldn't even play simple videos without stuttering. I went back to an older driver that is working well.

Several of the others are related to updating to Windows 10, of which I have no interest.

The last one has to do with support for Azerbaijani Manat and Georgian Lari currency symbols in Windows, which I don't need.

Are you suggesting that I let them all proceed, and then uninstall them later if I don't want them?

Restore KB2952664 only and try to install it.
Report if it is installed successfully or not.

Great, you can do the same for KB3013531 and KB3054476.
KB3068708 isn't needed.
KB3102429 is an optional update to support currency input for 2 specific languages. You can leave that one hidden if you like.
