Windows 7 corrupt system files

I am having trouble that a lot of links in control panel do not work and the computer is slow to boot. I have run sfc/scsnnow several times and each time corrupt files are found, only some of which have been repaired. I do not want to re-format or use a saved image from a few months ago. I have attached the CB file - can someone please help

First time I have posted - I must have made a mistake when I attached the file. I have found a procedure to add text attachments to a reply under additional options and have tried again, but I suspect the same problem. The attachment box is not intuitive - is there a tutorial on how to use it - my file definitely went somewhere and I dragged a copy into the lower box as instructed, after downloading the file, but all that happened was that the dragged file opened.

Hi,

The attachment manager can be a bit of a pain to use. :)

Try changing to the 'old fashioned' attachment manager which may have more success.

Click the "Settings" link at the top of the page --> General Settings (left hand column) --> Scroll down until you see Enhanced Attachment Uploading --> Change it to Off

Try uploading the files again with the 'old fashioned' uploader. Hopefully you'll have more success.

Kind regards,
Stephen

I followed your instructions and tried again, but the file was rejected as too big - presumably what happened before but without the message - I have now attached it as a zip file, less than one tenth of the size. Hope it works.

Thanks, Tekno!

The errors there are typical of having used a 'System Cleanup' tool form a rather bad software house. Have you used any such tool? - Which one?

If I'm correct, please uninstall it for your own good (first checking to see if there's a way to restore the deleted files) before we fix the problem....

I've uploaded a file - a58aa.zip- to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive

Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...

Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these
instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start
tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which
should be the option 'Repair my Computer'

Pick that

You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt

At the prompt type

DIR C:\a58aa

hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try

DIR D:\a58aa

or

DIR E:\a58aa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\a58aa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type

EXIT

and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt

then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

I have downloaded the a58aa folder and it is 100MB of wmv, mp4, mpg, jpg, wtv files and nothing else - is there a mistake?

Nope - that's exactly what it should be - please follow the instructions.

I am afraid I am having trouble. I have extracted a58aa to the main partition of the hard drive - C; it appears as the first folder in the root. Your instructions state extract to *C:\ * but that would not work C:\ did. I then logged as administrator and got to the command prompt and it came up as X:\windows\system32 > I typed DIR C:\a58a and got the lines
Volume in drive C: is system reserved
Directory of C:\
File not found

X is a second drive to store images - I tried to change it to C: but this was denied - what have I done wrong

Please read my instructions again - they do work if you follow them! :)

I tried again and it eventually worked on E drive, which is a partition that holds little used files and not the partition containing the a58aa file - odd. I ran sfc/scannow again and instead of the message saying corrupt files found but not all fixed there was the message "windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations". There are still things that do not work in Control Panel, but most now do. New cbs file attached

Drive letters change when you boot to the Recovery environment - which is why I phrase the instructions the way I do :)

That deems to have fixed the file errors, at least, and nothing obvious has cropped up in the background CBS log, either.

Let's see if this gives us any more data...

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

I followed the link and downloaded the system update readiness tool for Windows 7 64bit, but am reluctant to install it because it is 403 MB. Your post says save the CheckSUR tool from that download and install but there there seems no way of extracting it. Do I install the big download and hopefully then find the CheckSUR program available for running - presumably I will be able to remove the whole of the 403 MB downloaded/installed file at the end when no longer needed.

Thank you for all your help - the computer already seems somewhat better than it was, but still has a way to go.

It doesn't actually install anything - merely attempts to correct current installations using the backups it contains.
The download IS the tool :)

Just run it and collect the logs requested - post them in your reply, and we'llsee what it finds

I ran the download - took about 20 minutes with periods when nothing seemed to be happening, as you said. I have attached the two files but they both seem to indicate that nothing was found. I have not zipped them as they are only 1 kB each.
