Windows 7 CheckSUR unavailable manifest files

Hello
I am running a 7-year old Win 7 desktop which never had updates beyond SP1 which came with the installation DVD.
I need to update Win 7 before doing an upgrade to Win 10 for which I have the DVD. But Windows Update wouldn't work.
I have now installed and run CheckSUR, which took five hours. I attach the CheckSUR.log file (the .persist file is identical). The main problem seems to be three missing (unavailable) manifest files. If they were available perhaps the 37 errors thrown up would be solved on a re-run of CheckSUR.
Can you advise please, and supply me with the missing manifest files? It would be much appreciated.

Hello and welcome,

ListChkdskResult.exe and select Run as administrator. Notepad will open the file ListChkdskResult.txt on completion. (The file ListChkdskResult.txt can be found on your desktop.)
  • Copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Thanks for the quick response. I should add that I started in computing exactly 50 years ago this month, going on a FORTRAN programming course as a geophysics doctoral research student. So I know how to program (nowadays in Python) and generally keep my various PCs and Linux machines running over the years, but this is the very first time I've had to ask for online help! I do have some big gaps in my knowledge, including neglecting to have applied updates to Win 7 over the last 7 years. Now I'm in trouble.

Anyway I ran chkdsk (a 500 GB disk, took about 10 minutes), then tried to run ListChkdskResult.exe as admin. I get a Win script host error window saying:

C: ...Temp\RarSFX1\ListChkdskResult.vbe
Line: 1
Char: 910
Error: 0x80041001
Code 80041001
Source: Null

The text file is on my desktop, but is empty.
What next?

The log shows "8 KB in bad sectors.". The CheckSur log shows also some file corruptions.
Run the following tool.

Download
51ab99ff51ec9-CrystalDiskInfo.png
CrystalDiskInfo.zip and save it on your desktop.
Extract the .zip file into a new folder.
In this new folder, run the tool DiskInfo.
When the tool is finished, it will show some information about the hard disc.
Note: Resize the window so that all information is visible.
Take a screenshot. Read this on how to take a screenshot.
Upload the image file to a file-sharing site and post the download link.

Good morning and thank-you. As you can see this disk is old, and I had in fact cloned it to a new SSD 6 months ago. I always keep my system on a physically separate disk from data D: But Win 7 on the new SSD was beginning to give me new problems, so I have reverted to the spinning disk C:, as shown in the screenshot above, to try to update Win 7 there, then upgrade to Win 10. Then I'll re-clone to the new SSD.

The "Power On Hours" reports about 7 years. Make sure you have a backup of all your important data.
Please report back when done.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Filedropper or SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

  3. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  4. Press the Fix button.
  5. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  6. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  7. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  8. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2:
Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to your next reply.

Step 3:
Is AVG still installed and if so, which version ?

I've obtained the fixlog.txt file and now started CheckSUR. If it takes as long as last time that will be 5 hours, which is early tomorrow (Paris time) for me. So the CheckSUR.log file will follow in about 8 hours from now.
In the meantime I attach the fixlog.txt. My AVG Internet Security is Basic Protection with File Shield and Behavior Shield. I don't see any version number. The Chrome and Firefox extensions are currently disabled.
Thank-you for your persistence. I will certainly be making a donation to SNF. Yours, David

No need to hurry. Take your time.

I have fixed some of the corruptions in your components hive.

Please do following:

Replace Components Hive
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download COMPONENTS.ZIP and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the COMPONENTS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select rename. Rename it to COMPONENTS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Components folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to your next reply.

Here you are (it took 55 minutes). I presume the last two statements labelled (w) are just warnings.
Fingers crossed.

Hello
Not having heard from you, I tried running Windows Update today. Over several runs and reboots it now seems to be working, in that almost all updates have been installed - perhaps a hundred in total. I think just three important ones were left.
So I've put your fixlist.txt on my desktop, following your latest instructions, but when I try to run frst64.exe as admin I now get an AVG threat secured warning - moved it to quarantine because it was infected with IDP.HELU.AID15.
I downloaded frst.exe again, and now AVG is saying it has blocked it because it is infected with IDP.Generic.
Please advise.
Thanks
