Hi, Sorry to trouble you but after reading of numerous success stories I thought I would try myself as a last resort to a clean install which would be very time consuming for me.

I have ran the system readiness tool which has created the following log :-

Hi Stephen, Thanks for the welcome message. Any help would be awesome I really don't want to spend days doing a fresh install and was up late last night trying to get this fixed.

I found the first manifest file on my windows 7 laptop and tried to copy that over but didn't have permissions. I tried to edit permissions in the security tab but read and write were greyed out and also messed with the UAC settings both to no avail so any help with this would also be needed if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Kindest regards,
Rob.

Ok I've made a little progress I can now write to the required files and have fixed the manifest file issue (hopefully !!)

Four remaining now ......

Wow.. where the heck did you find that manifest file if you don't mind me asking? I've been searching high and low for that file - on multiple computers, virtual machines and many, many downloads. Well, that makes my life easier, since you've done that step for me!

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Please download the file, Packs.zip from my Dropbox -->here<--and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

I need to update it a little though :)

Yeah, I'd got it down to 2005. But even after installing it on a VM, the manifest wasn't there. Nor on my own system. Nor my mum's machine.

Actually, I've just found a copy. I had to install the whole of Visual Studio 2005 to get it though.

Hi Stephen, many thanks for the post and the files. I managed to find the manifest file on my laptop which has SP1 installed and also by chance has a version of Visual Studio so it sounds like I got completely lucky with that one !!!

The repair file has fixed a couple of errors but I'm now left with this ...

Tried 4 times and 4 blue screens PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA. it looks like it gets right to the end - so frustrating!!

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Hi Rob,

I completely understand you want to get this fixed as soon as possible, but I urge you to be patient and wait for Stephen to post a fix :) How did you put the missing files in place? Also, did you put the same FXSCOVER.exe in both folders? From what I understand of the steps you have taken so far, one of the files is the wrong file and all 3 files can now be modified by any website or unprivileged program, should it want to. The risk is small as these files have never been target in the past, as far as I know, but it is still something we will need to fix for you. Just sit tight and we'll have you up and running in no time!

Tom

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the words of encouragement - will do.

Just to clarify yes it is the same file and I copied them all using the command prompt takeown and icacls commands giving administrators full access.

Kindest regards,
Rob

I've had a play with this before going to work. It seems that the BSOD's were caused by separate memory speed issues as I also popped in a QX9770 CPU yesterday and it seems that my DIMS are not happy to run at 1600Mhz - promise not to mess with any hardware until this is sorted :smile9:

If this helps at all installing SP1 from the downloaded update package it gets to the end of the progress bar, reboots twice then gets to about 11 % complete before giving me an error and reverting back to normal.

Fix - part 1

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

SFCFix.zip --> https://www.dropbox.com/s/tb7mav68iowhejq/SFCFix.zip

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

There is a second part to this fix coming in my next post, once you have completed this one to address:

Thanks Stephen - the other log is too big and the site just hangs when I try and post it. Is there another way to get it to you ?, I have a dropbox account how do I send you a file link ?

The SP1 error message upon restart reads " The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid. Error : ERROR_FILE_INVALID(0x800703ee)"

I really appreciate your time on this.

All the best,
Rob.

Good, that SFCFix script is looking happy :)

To get me the other file, you can upload it to Dropbox. Zip up the log (to make it smaller), then copy it to the Dropbox folder on your system. This can be found in the favourites pane:

Favourites%20list.PNG

Or it can be found at: C:\Users\{Your username}\Dropbox

Once you've copied it into the Dropbox folder, right click it and choose Copy Public Link.

I'm currently trying to prepare the next stage of your fix, but am having some issues. Please bear with me! :)

Regards,
Stephen
