Hi there!

I'm experiencing heavy disturbances in video (and some pure-audio) playback, especially through chrome (up-to-date) and Windows Media Player (emulated optical drives and dedicated optical drive) as well as some noticeable general lag around the system as a whole.

I have observed heavy CPU usage by process: NT Kernel & System, which to my understanding should be flat-lined the vast majority of the time.

As per this thread, I have run the 8.1 SDK performance tools and edited the registry as directed.

The console returns:
Code:
xperf: error: NT Kernel Logger: invalid flags. (0x3ec).

I've quadruple-checked my input and it matches the code from the aforementioned thread.

I have attached a SPECCY snapshot and a BSOD File Collection.

Please advise as to the tools/xperf so I can post the .ETLs. I'm looking forward to solving this one.

Sincerely,

--Matt

Re: Windows 7 A/V Lag/Glitches

Update:

I originally ran the code from the
Code:
c:\program files (86)\windows kits\8.1\windows performance toolkit\
directory.

I just now tried the full path (\windows performance toolkit) and both root directories, (8.1 and windows kits), all three of which returned a different error code:
Code:
xperf: error: NT Kernel Logger: A device attached to this system is not functioning. (0x1f).

Hi -

I moved your thread to the BSOD forum because the zip file contained 2 dumps from 29 Dec & 30 Dec 2013.

The probable cause of both BSODs is this Networx driver -
Code:
networx.sys Tue Nov 19 12:06:31 2013 (528B9A97)
http://sysnative.com/drivers/driver.php?id=networx.sys

I would suggest uninstalling the app if a new version cannot be found.

While Windbg did not indicate Team Viewer was involved in the BSODs, this 2007 driver seems old -
Code:
teamviewervpn.sys Thu Dec 13 04:22:09 2007 (4760F9C1)
http://sysnative.com/drivers/driver.php?id=teamviewervpn.sys

Be sure that your Team Viewer installation is updated - http://www.teamviewer.com/en/download/windows.aspx

Your audio/video lag issues may have been caused by Networx and perhaps TeamViewer (if running at the time) or other network related apps.

You can use SysInternals AutoRuns to prevent auto-start-up of Team Viewer and other apps by un-checking the box under "Logon" tab.

AutoRuns - from Microsoft TechNet - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902

Happy Holidays!

Hi,

To add to John's great analysis, networx is very troublesome software. If I am analyzing network related crashes, aside from checking if an antivirus is present on the system, one of the first things I look for is networx. It causes a large amount of NETBIOS conflicts. If you pair an antivirus + networx, it's even worse.

Patrick

Hi gents,

First of all, I apologize for not deleting those BSOD logs before the collection. They were solved in another thread by the wonderful Mr. TomasD.

To update you on my progress with the latency: 'tis solved. I tracked it down to an unsigned bluetooth driver that was making tons of calls to the kernel.

Here's the new problem, and you can move this if need be, but I can't find any threads that cover this:

I went to intel's site and used their auto-detect driver update utility and downloaded the indicated driver package. After install, the unsigned bluetooth driver was unaffected/unresolved. I have no bluetooth functionality as far as I can tell. I've tried sending photos from my phone to my computer, and from computer to phone, which is something I've done many times in recent memory. There seems to be no active server.

If y'all could help me with this, I'd have what I'd consider to be a flawless system. Responsiveness is better than showroom quality and media playback is a cinch. I'm going to attach a snapshot of Device Manager showing the bluetooth devices and an updated file collection and perf report and speccy snapshot. Mind you, the three grouped bluetooth drivers depicted in the screenshot are the errant, non-functioning variety.

I pray you can help, because I'm absolutely befuddled after hours and hours of driver hunting.

All the best in this new year,

--Matt

Hi Patrick! Any suggestions on a replacement for Networx, good sir? I have a 20GB/month cap and tracking is more or less essential.

Thanks in advance,

Hi -

I located your BSOD thread and marked it SOLVED.

RE: Networx - I installed it on a Windows 7 x64 system here last night and so far all is well. I suggest that you keep it in place for now. (Nice app, BTW !!)

RE: Bluetooth - PERFMON (Health Report) shows numerous Bluetooth system services starting up and running. No errors were reported.

One reason that the Bluetooth drivers from Intel may not have installed properly is that you have an OEM version of Windows 7 installed (pre-installed by Dell, just as other manufacturers do). Sometimes OEM versions include modified drivers (by the OEM - Dell).

Try the Bluetooth drivers for your Inspiron 15R 5520 from Dell Support -

Drivers & Downloads | Dell US

Under "Network", there is one called "Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 Bluetooth Application" -- try that one. Your Intel Centrino wifi appears to be working fine.

Be sure to create a system restore point 1st -
START | type create | "create a restore point"

All device drivers for x64 must be signed. Just curious - how do you know the BT driver from Intel is unsigned?

Happy New Year!

Hey there!

I reinstalled networx without the lan driver as suggested by TomasD. Thanks for the confirmation!

I knew that the Bluetooth drivers were unsigned because a) they were unsigned and required me to manually allow install when I installed from DELL (not intel. intel was all good) and b) they showed up with a yellow flag as unsigned in the device manager (before upgrading to intel's bluetooth drivers).

Now, I've downloaded the DELL bluetooth drivers as suggested, but it won't install. It says it can't downgrade from version 3.xxxx. I can't figure out how to uninstall the current package completely. Any suggestions?

Happy New Year to you, as well!

Okay, I figured it out. I had to allow the former unsigned driver to reinstall for the intel bluetooth uninstall to complete. Upon restart, I had the audio lag in my windows logon sound again.

After installing the updated DELL drivers you pointed to, the audio/visual lag is gone, but the system didn't calm down for over 5 minutes, reporting a lot of activity with windows media player network sharing process. I generated a perfmon report in case that helps.

Bluetooth sharing still will not work. It reports that device object push service is not available or busy.

Hi John,

Attached as requested, sir. I should have run it before - slipped my mind.

I tried the windows mobile device center last night, but I'll reinstall it. The others just don't apply to my problem; I sleep and wake flawlessly and there's no way I'm qualified to manually debug registry entries -- I'd probably have a heart attack and give my computer one, too.

Hope this collection helps narrow it down. I just don't know what to do. I've never had a computer with bluetooth before and it's never been a problem on this one until now.

All the best,

Quick update: I can pair with devices but cannot push/receive files. Same error when trying to push: object push service is not available or busy. No activity at all when push attempted from devices to laptop, just a fail.

Hi, Matt.

Could we have the Service Tag details for your Inspiron, please? It would be useful to have a reference to the exact hardware supplied in your notebook.

Have you upgraded/added any hardware since it was purchased?

Update: All's well. Installed latest wireless and bluetooth drivers from intel for a fourth time and voila.

Hi Matt. . .

I'm glad that you got this resolved. :thumbsup2:

Just to confirm -- the drivers came from Intel Support & NOT from Dell?

Thanks,

John

EDIT: p.s. -- no mention of the Intel driver being "unsigned"?

Does Device Manager show any red/yellow flags?

Thanks John.

I never would have gotten this computer back (and better) if not for yourself and TomasD. Thank you, gents.

Yes sir, Intel's latest 2230 wifi 16.7.0.0 and their latest bluetooth 3.1.1311.

I don't know if it's informative or not, but here's a SPECCY.

Also, for what it's worth, the unsigned drivers came from DELL's latest pack. I even tried installing them once more during the whole debacle to be sure, and they were still there. Hope that's informative.

Hi Matt. . .

Yes, all info is helpful - thank you.

Also, I greatly appreciate you taking the time to post the many results, observations, your successes (and non-successes - I hate to say "failures"!!!) -- and of course your conclusions.

What more could we possibly ask for than someone like yourself following (or at least attempting/trying) every suggestion; posting results; providing everything we asked for and more?? I can't think of one single thing!

Thank you for your patience and the many hours you spent in solving this.

Working with you has been an extreme pleasure on my part.

Kind Regards. . .

John
