[SOLVED] Windows 7 64bit update problem

Hi I'm Gary R,

I'm a Security Analyst, and a Windows Update Trainee, and I'd like to help you with your problems.

As a trainee, any instructions I give you must first be checked by a qualified update expert, before I post them. This will by necessity introduce some delay to any of my replies, so please be patient.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.

That looks better.

Please follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log.

  • Download SURT for your system. (Windows 7 SP1 x64)
  • Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go through the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes).
  • On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
  • Attach this log to your next reply.

Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

Please Note ... if the file is too big to upload to your next post, please upload via a file sharing service of your choice and provide the link in your next reply

Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace

It's just past midnight here, so I'm turning in now, and I won't see your reply till the morning.

Sorry, I can't run this file. After clicking, nothing happens.

The file is only 412KB not 526MB.

I've posted a copy of the file you need ... Windows6.1-KB947821-v12-x64.msu ... to ... Windows6.1-KB947821-v12-x64.msu

It should be 311MB in size.

Save it to your Desktop, and run it from there. I've run it successfully on my W7 SP1 system and it runs OK on that, so it should run OK on yours.

If not, please let me know.

Although it will say it is installing, it doesn't actually do so, and will appear to stall. That is normal, and it is actually scanning your machine (which usually takes about 20 mins).

When it's finished scanning it will say .... Installation Complete .... in which case click on close. (It hasn't actually installed anything)

Now go to .... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log .... and attach it to your next reply.

Thanks, I'll get back to you with the next fix as soon as I've sourced the necessary files, and had my fix approved by a fully qualified helper.

Sorry for being so long, had a bit of a problem sourcing the necessary files to repair things.

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.

  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Next ...

  • Restart the computer.
  • Run the command SFC /SCANNOW in an elevated command prompt and report the result.
  • If it fails, attach a zipped C:\Windows\Logs\CBS.log to your next reply.

Please try updating your computer.

If successful let me know.

If unsuccessful please attach your CBS.log in your next reply.

Looking over your CBS.log now, I'll get back to you as soon as I've had time to analyse it.

Sorry to be so late, had a few problems that needed to be resolved before I was able to compile this next fix.

Please do the following.

Install Update with DISM

  • Download ... THIS ... update and save to your desktop (must be in this location). The file name will be Windows6.1-KB4534310-x64.cab.zip and about 588MB in size.
  • Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  • Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.
dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB4534310-x64.cab\Windows6.1-KB4534310-x64.cab

  • You should receive the message:
  • The operation completed successfully.
  • Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
  • Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line, if you do answer Y.

On completion, or after a reboot(if necessary), your computer should have installed the update KB4534310 please let me know if it was successful, if not please post me your latest C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log file.

The filepath I gave you was correct.

I'm looking over your latest logs now, and will get back to you once I've analysed them to find out why the failure occurred.

OK I've modified the file package we used in the last fix, which should hopefully address the problem it had installing.

Before we start, please delete the file ... Windows6.1-KB4534310-x64.cab ... that is already on your desktop, as we don't want it to get mistaken for the new file with the same name that you're going to need to download for this fix.

The file path in the instructions below is correct, so do not alter it when you run the fix

  • If you do not get a success message and the update fails to install, please post your new .... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
