I have tried repeatedly to use Windows Update to install both 2018-10 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4462927) and 2018-10 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4462923) and it fails every time. Error code 80073701.

I have rebooted, run C Cleaner on the registry, run disk cleanup several times, cleared out the %temp% folder. Nothing helped. After trying several times, I tried restoring from the earliest system restore point I had but since I had tried so many times to install and failed, my earliest system restore point was not earlier than my first attempt. so no change.

I saw this post from someone else's thread on sysnative:

Install Update using Dism

  1. Please download KB4093113 http://download.windowsupdate.com/c/...fac1fa7ac9.msu save the file to c:\windows\temp
  2. change the name of the update file to a smaller name windows6.1-KB4093113-x64.msu
(keep the extension .msu in the end of the file name in case its visible if not ignore that)
  3. open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  4. type or Copy & Paste the following commands line by line:

    cd /d c:\windows\temp
    expand windows6.1-KB4093113-x64.msu -f:* C:\windows\temp
    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\windows\temp\windows6.1-KB4093113-x64.cab

  5. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)?
  6. Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.

So I did all of the above successfully, but it still did not fix windows update.

So I then followed instructions on this site:
I ran sfc /scannow - no problems encountered.
I downloaded and ran the Windows Update Hotfix Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64 - no problems encountered
I downloaded and ran SFCFix and it did encounter problems which it could not fix. Log file attached
My CBS Log folder can be accessed here: CBS.zip - Google Drive
I then tried windows update again, but still the same problem, same error on both updates.

I would very much appreciate your help.

Thanks,

Hello and welcome!

Do not install Previews as they cause issues.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service and just provide the link here.

Thank you!

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.
6. Try updates and if any fail, attach CBS.log.

I downloaded FRST64.exe and the fixlist.txt and ran as administrator. I had to disable my virus checker but then it ran with no problems. The log file is attached.

I then rebooted and then I ran Windows Update to install KB4462923. However it failed again with the same error code.

I have uploaded the CBS folder which can be accessed here: CBS 29-Oct-18.zip - Google Drive

Thanks.

I downloaded FRST64.exe and I downloaded your sysnative attachment named fixlist.rar and I ran it as administrator.
I received the message "Failed to update (1)" and then a second dialog box which said "No fixlist.txt found".
I tried running fixlist.rar, I thought that might be an archive that would expand to fixlist.txt but it said that it was not a valid archive.
So there was no Fixlog.txt file generated.

Thanks.
