Noob question... I see "Microsoft 7 - amd64" listed in SFCFIX above, yet the laptop has an Intel I3 CPU. Would this have any bearing on the problem or is it something to be disregarded?

AMD64 is the CPU architecture. It is listed this way for any 64-bit version of Windows, even if you have an Intel processor (excluding Itanium server processors, but they are rare) :)

Your log looks good. Check for and install updates again.

Please try this:

Download Windows 7 SP1 for 64-bit systems here: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...AB78-7FB0D4461357/windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe
Run windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe once it has finished downloading.

If the installation fails, zip up and attach the following files:
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
C:\Windows\setuperr.log
C:\Windows\setupact.log
C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.app.log
C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log

If the zip is too large to attach here (8MB) upload it to a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.
