[SOLVED] Windows 7 64-bit can't update nor run SFC

For the past week I have been trying to solve an issue where windows 7 will not cooperate at all, perhaps someone here can be of help.


I noticed that the free upgrade offer to Windows 10 was not displaying in the lower left so thought that perhaps I needed to manually do a Windows Update. Clicking Windows update from the start menu gave me a failure of 0x8007370a.


I repeatedly tried running sfc /scannow and would get: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."


Atempted to do a inplace repair using the dvd, however once it booted I had no mouse or keyboad.
In place repair booting to the hardrive failed as well.


I'm attaching the cbs.log file and the sfcfix.txt file perhaps you can see something that I am not.


Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. You have corruption within your components hive. Please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
 1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

I followed your instructions and copied the file to SendSpace, here is the download link

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

    button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Good. Next step is to run the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

I had already installed/ran that file on sept 28. I downloaded again but the installer failed, I am running the sept 28 one which is identical and seems to be running. I'll post the log when that completes.
 
The log is basically telling me that the download may have been incomplete. What I suggest we start with is the following.

1. Reboot your computer into a Clean Boot state following the instructions at the following link.

2. The try following the steps below again.

That's good news. We should probably do all the fixes in a Clean Boot state with Antivirus off. Please do the following.

  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files). If the Manifests folder doesn't exist within Winsxs you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests
  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files). If the Packages folder doesn't exist within Servicing you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages
  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, zip up and attach the following log file:
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

I performed all of the tasks. I have 3 copies of Surt cause I kept downloading rather than just running the first one.. anyway I tried 3 times to run SURT and each time it returned "updates not installed Hotfix kb947821" I'm attaching the CheckSUR log.

This time it got to 96% before failing with the message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" Here is the link for cbs.txt https://www.sendspace.com/file/wusoz7

Awesome. Now that we got it to run I can see all the corrupted files that need replaced. Please do the following. The file that you will be downloading is currently uploading as it's fairly large. So if the link doesn't work immediately then try in 10 minutes.
