Hi All,

Since May our Windows 2016 Server has repeatedly failed to install updates with error 0x800703f1.

  • When attempting to run the SFCFix, it crashes when reading the CBSLog and lists an "unhandled exception" in the log.
  • Running ComponentsScanner comes back clean with no corruption.
  • Running Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth fails at 99.1% with error 0x800f081f "Source Files Not Found"
Attached is the CBS log.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Latest log looks good. Please try updating your machine.

If successful please let me know.

If not, please post me your latest CBS.log

Please post me a copy of your DRIVERS Hive ...

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the DRIVERS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named DRIVERS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • Please attach it to your next post.
  • The file may sometimes be too large to upload here, if so please upload to a file sharing service.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

Please post me the link to the file

Hit your Windows Key + R to open a Run: window
type winver then click OK

An About Windows window will open.

Please note down the complete Version details and post them for me.

OK thanks.

There's a problem with your DRIVERS hive which means it's unable to load, which is why you're getting the error code ... 0x800703f1

I need to consult with my colleagues on the best way to address this, so it may be a while before I get back to you. I have an idea what needs doing, but I'd prefer a second opinion before taking action.

Question .... do you have a backup copy of your server, that we may be able to source a replacement for your current damaged DRIVERS hive from ?

I don't have a backup from prior to the issue occurring. I did spin up a test VM from the template which this server was originally built from, so it should be a good match.

Can you post me the DRIVERS hive file from your Server template then please.

I'd like to take a look at it before we try using it as a replacement.

Also .... what does winver say is the OS version on the VM you created from your template ?

Good news is that it loads OK. Bad news is that in its current state we can't use it as a replacement because it's from a different OS version than the one that's currently installed on your live machine.

So, what we need to do first, is to update your VM with 14393.4770 to 14393.5125

To do that, boot your VM, and install the following update package manually .... KB5013952 ... Microsoft Update Catalog

If you get a "not for this OS" message when you try to install it, you will first need to install the SSU update .... KB5014026 ... Microsoft Update Catalog

Once you've updated your VM (and rebooted it to finalise the update), please post the new DRIVERS hive file, so I can have a look at it. There's a driver beeing flagged in your CBS.log that I need to check is present on this possible new replacement.

Sorry to be late getting back to you, was out all day yesterday and didn't get in till late.

Latest hive looks good, and I just need to check a few things, and consult with colleagues before we proceed.

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread, and no one else should follow these instructions.

  • Download DRIVERS.ZIP and save to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on it and select Extract all....
    • Make sure the Show extracted files when complete is checked and click Extract.
    • You should now have the DRIVERS file that we will be using to replace your current one.

Next ...

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  • Right-click on the current DRIVERS file and select Rename.
    • Rename it to DRIVERS.old
    • Note .... If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  • Take the file from the DRIVERS folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Next ...

  • Click Search button and type Command Prompt
  • From the results, right click on the Command Prompt icon, and select Run as administrator
  • A Command Window will open.
