[SOLVED] Windows 2012 R2 updates fail to install

Hi All,

we are having problems installing rollups and cu updates on a server.
these are the main two we are trying to install at the moment
KB4284815 & KB4284863
this is one of the errors
Code: 
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80073701: 2018-06 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4284815).
we have tried several things including DSIM repairs
and even tried the sysnative sfcfix and it did fix a few things but we are still unable to install the updates.

any help would be great

Remove Update Manually
 1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:4050946

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

thanks for the warm welcome :)

windows is saying that the update is not installed
 
FRST Registry Search
 1. Click your Start button and choose Control Panel.
2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
3. Select the Programs group.
4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Windows Features dialog. Wait until this dialog populates with information.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps.
5. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
6. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
7. Copy and paste KB4050946 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
8. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.
9. You may close any remaining open windows now.

i dont get the windows features dialog box with windows 2012 r2
it loads up server manager with add a new feature dialog box. i assume this is ok ?

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
2. Extract it.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.
6. Try updates again and attach CBS.log if it fails.

i will try to update the server later tonight and let you know how i go.

sorry to bug you again but it looks like there is still one that is causing issues.

Error Code 80092004 on KB4340558

i ran FRST64 and searched for KB4340558 and nothing was found.

Restart Windows in Safe Mode.

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable


  • Extract the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to c:\Windows\TEMP the zip will extract to a folder called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
  • Execute the file Repair_Windows.exe from the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder, accept the Security warning and the EULA
  • Click the button Jump To Repairs
  • Click the Open Repairs button to access the following screen:

  • Click the box All Repairs to uncheck all the boxes
  • Check only the following boxes:


16 - Repair Windows Updates




  • Check the box Restart/Shutdown System When Finished > Restart System
  • Click the Start Repairs button
 
i haven't had a chance to try this but ill close this thread.
if there is any further issues ill create a new one.
