windows 2008 R2 sp1 fails with error: 0x80004005

Hello Forum,

I am trying to install the SP1 on a windows 2008 R2 server.
since it did not come up in the windows update, i downloaded the file from microsoft (windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe)
i have tried it a couple of time and searched the internet for help.

here are the things i already tried:
1) verify enough disk space (10+ GB free on c drive)
2) run on a admin cmd "mountvol /E" and rebooted server
3) ran system update readiness tool (Windows6.1-KB947821-v33-x64.msu). this seems to allways install hotfix KB947821.
4) ran "sfc/scannow" did not find any corruption
5) downloaded and ran the SFCFix.exe and ran it, but did not find anything either.
6) downloaded SFCFix.txt as the CBs logfiles are already big and re-run SFCFix with the textfile.(unfortunatly i created this thread afterwards)

i am out of ideas and have no glue how to fix this.
The SP install runs through (install complete. you need to restart), then when restarting it goes up to i belive 92% configuring service pack and failing afterwards with reverting changes.

any help and/or ideas are wlecome.

thanks

ps: content of SFCFix.txt (after run with downloaded SFCFix.txt):

not sure if it uploaded any data...

Welcome to Sysnative,

It seems your log files didn't successfully upload. Let's try again:

SFCFix CBS Collection

  1. Download SFCFix.exe using the following link and save the tool to your Desktop: [sfcfixdownload]Download SFCFix[/sfcfixdownload]
  2. Download SFCFix.txt and save this to your Desktop as well: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u.../Scripts/~Generic/Collect/CBS/SFCFix.txt?dl=1
  3. On your Desktop, you should now see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.
  4. Drag the file SFCFix.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  5. SFCFix will now begin to upload your CBS logfiles to our server.

Regards,
Stephen

did it again (and retried sp install, after applying KB 2533552),
then ran SFCFix.exe as explained.

only difference i noticed is that this time i was asked about my forum user name, so maybe this time data got uploaded?

There seems to be a bug in our tool and your logs haven't uploaded. This upload system is pretty new, and we're still ironing out the bugs, I'll let the developer know.

In the mean time, can you upload it to Dropbox or SendSpace. Sorry for the hassle!

Stephen

can do that on sunday evening earliest.
can you give me a list (and locations) of the files needed?
Can zip em up if needed.

thanks

No worries. Sorry, I meant to give you the instructions!

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button :startorb: then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this new file to your next post.

Stephen

the cbs log in zip file seems to be smaller in size than before the weekend. (but zip is still too big (>7.15 MB) to attach to the post)
using sendspace iunstead:
https://www.sendspace.com/file/18yn05

Not sure if the needed data is still in there.
In case it is missing now, i will have to re-run the sp1 upgrade

thanks

Hi,

  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    wmic qfe list full /format:htable > %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\TeknoVenus.html

  4. This will produce a HTML file called TeknoVenus.html on your desktop. Zip it up and attach it to your next post.

done as requested, but the generated file is empty (0 bytes).

here is the cmd quote:
--------------------------------------------

C:\Windows\system32>wmic qfe list full /format:htable > %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\TeknoVenus.html
Invalid XSL format (or) file name.

Interesting, it works fine on my copy of Server 2008...

I'm just trying to get as much information to go on here, since this is a pretty elusive problem. All the usual logs aren't proving very helpful, so lets grab another log. Can you zip up and attach the WindowsUpdate log, found at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

Stephen

hmm...while waiting for a response i tried another update after:

Navigate to C:\Windows\servicing\sqm.
Right click and choose Properties.
Choose the security TAB.
Highlight System and click on edit.
Check Allow Full control and click OK.
Do the same for the Administrator.
Restart the computer.

But that attempt(31-07-2014) failed as well.

ERROR: E_FAIL(0x80004005)

suggestions?
