[SOLVED] Windows 11 Home 22H2: KB5026372 failed to install

I'm running Windows 11 Home 22H2, OS Build 22621.1265. I've been unable to install any Cumulative Update since the February 2023 update. They typically fail at around 25%. Other updates install fine.

In terms of steps I've taken:
  • I've tried deleting the Windows Update cache, but it failed to fix the problem.
  • I've downloaded the standalone update from the Windows Catalog, but that fails in precisely the same way.
  • sfc /scannow produces the error "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."
  • dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth produces the error "The source files could not be found".
  • As the CBS log will show, I've tried downloading a Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft, and specifying that as /source in dism. That failed, repeatedly, with an error suggesting that it didn't find install.esd / install.wim. Extracting the relevant install.wim file from install.esd with /export-image and mounting it with dism /mount-image got past that error, but dism continued to fail with the error 'The source files could not be found'.

Any help would be very gratefully received. My CBS logs and the output from ComponentsScanner are attached.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Step 1. Download
56f31e53c97da-SFCFix.PNG
SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Thank you for looking into my problem, Maxstar. I'm sorry this reply is a few days late - I was travelling on work and have only just returned this evening.

DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth fails with the following error:
Error: 0x800f081f
The source files could not be found.

I've attached SFCFix.txt and a zipped version of \Windows\Logs\CBS

That worked perfectly. DISM ran with no errors and said the operation was successful. Windows then installed the May cumulative update without any problem at all. You probably don't need to see the SFCFix log, but I've attached it in case you do.

Thank you so much - this is an incredible level of support! I've donated to the site.
