[SOLVED] Windows 10 will no longer update

So this all started when I tried to get the Game Pass app on PC which requires you to have the latest version of Windows 10 (1903) in order to install. Whenever I try to upgrade with Windows Upgrade Assistant, once the installation ends and I reset my PC, it gets to about 9% on that blue screen and then a message says "Undoing changes made to computer" and then proceeds to boot the old version of Windows 10.

So I googled a couple things and one of the things mentioned was put "DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" into cmd.exe. When I did it gave me the message "The configuration registry database is corrupt." Trying to run SFC /scannow it says "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." Running "repair startup" in advanced start up also fails.

Even the updates for the current version of Windows 10 I'm running (1809) won't install under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

I've also tried update through Media Creation Tool, which also fails.

The only thing I can think left to do is just do fresh install, but I'm worried even that won't work or will soft-brick my PC (not the first time it's happened). I also don't want to have to reinstall everything over a slow internet connection.

Thank you for your time.

Hello and welcome!

Please do the following:

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.

Thank you. While I review the hive, please do the following:

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

Thanks.

Step 1 - Replace Components Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download COMPONENTS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the COMPONENTS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select rename. Rename it to COMPONENTS.bad.
    Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Components folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Sorry, how do you download the components? When I click on it it says "The file cannot be previewed. Please check to see if your file extension is correct."

Awesome!

  1. Download the Media Creation Tool and save this to your desktop. Go ahead and run this as well. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you get to this link.
  2. Accept the License Agreement
  3. Download the ISO file to your desktop.
  4. Double-click on the ISO and then run the setup to try and upgrade your machine.

We want to get the ISO so that you don't have to keep downloading which can take hours.

Okay. I already have the .iso downloaded. When I ran setup though earlier before making this thread, I don't think there was an option to upgrade? Only an option for fresh install?

Yes, it's weird. When I run Media Creation Tool it has two options:

1. Upgrade this PC now
2. Create installation media

When I choose Create installation media and make an .iso and run that actual setup.exe from the .iso I do not see the option to upgrade, however.
