Hi all,
I've been attempting to update my laptop for a couple of days now to Windows 10, version 20H2 but every installation (~10 tries) ended up being a dead end.

Most of the failed installations pointed to error 0x80070003 but I tried once today and the failed installation provided the error 0xC1420121.

By browsing through some threads on the Microsoft community forums, I've tried multiple methods to try to fix this but to no avail:
1) Attempting to use the Windows Update Troubleshooter
The troubleshooter couldn't find any issues.
2)Resetting the software distribution folders via Error code 0x80070003
After a restart, the windows update still failed.
3) Using the Windows 10 Updater via Download Windows 10
Nearing the end of installation, the updater presents a window indicating that the installation has failed with no discernable error code.
4) Using the Media Creation Tool via Download Windows 10
Much like #2, the updater displays a small window which says the installation has failed.
Here is the link to the CBS.zip: CBS.zip
and attached is the log file from SFCFix.

Thanks in advance for your voluntary time!
,Terence

Hello Terishrimp

Apologies for the delay - do you still require assistance?

Hi Bruce,

No worries at all, sorry for the late response.

Yes I would very much appreciate it.

Hi

Please do the following.

Install Update with DISM

  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Keep the defaults and click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows10.0-KB4577266-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.
Let me know if this is successful.

Hi Bruce,

The operation was not successful. I received the error 0x800f081e.

Hi

When you check for windows update what update is offered?

Hi Bruce,

When I check for a windows update, it's looking to update to Windows 10, version 20H2

ok, can you attempt the installation and attach the CBS log when it fails.

Hi

Please do the following.

Export/Upload CBS folder
  1. On Windows 8 and Windows 10, press the Windows key, type This PC, and press Enter.
On Windows Vista and Windows 7, click the Start button then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created on your desktop.
  8. Please upload it to a file sharing service and provide the link to it in your next reply. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace

Hi Bruce,

I tried researching a bit more online for fixes to my problem and I came upon something that worked.
I thought I should post it here in case someone might have the same issues that I had:

I followed the advice from this forum post: We couldn't install this update (0xc1420121) | Windows Community
One user noted to install the Windows ADK from Microsoft.

I found the page to download and install the Windows ADK: Download and install the Windows ADK

I then downloaded Windows ADK version 2004 for Windows 10 from that page. Alternatively, here's the direct link to the download: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2120254
When prompted to install certain features from the ADK, I decided to check all of them to cover the whole field (I'm not sure if this is necessary).

After downloading the ADK, I once again tried to install version 20h2 through Windows Update and it successfully updated!

Thank you for your help Bruce. Please mark this post as Solved.

Sincerely,
Terence

Thanks for the update and glad you got the issue solved. (y)
