Hi,
I am trying to upgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit, to Windows 10 Pro, 32 bit. I am using an ISO file on USB stick to upgrade. The ISO file is WIN10_21H2_English_X32.iso. Everytime I try to upgrade it quits with an error message saying the system registry contains invalid file paths. I ran DISM /Online / Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth and the SURTool log shows 15 corruptions. Is this why the Windows 10 upgrade doesn't work? Thanks.

Hello and welcome,

I ran DISM /Online / Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth and the SURTool log shows 15 corruptions. Is this why the Windows 10 upgrade doesn't work?
Attach the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to your next reply.

Uninstall Avast if not already done.
Try the upgrade again and report the result.
If it fails please do following:

Provide the Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Gofile or WeTransfer and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Gofile or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

Hi Peter,
I uninstalled Avast using Programs & Features in Control Panel. I then tried upgrading to Windows 10 using the ISO file on USB but it failed again with the same message as before: "The system registry contains invalid file paths".

Here is the Components.zip file you requested.

Following fix will remove remnants of Avast.

Step 1:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
32-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  2. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  3. Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  4. Press the Fix button.
  5. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  6. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  7. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  8. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

Step 2:
Reboot the machine.
Try the upgrade again and report the result.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your help so far.

I ran the script with FRST and then tried to install Windows 10. It still failed at the same point as before where is says "Working on updates 30%" the registry contains invalid file paths. Then at the very end another screen pops up saying "We couldn't install Windows 10, error 0xC1900101 - 0x30018, The installation failed in the FIRST.BOOT phase with the error during SYSPREP_SPECIALIZE operation.

The Fixlog.txt file is attached.

Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log.
  1. Download SURT for your system. (Windows 7 SP1 x86)
  2. Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go through the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes).
  3. On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log.
  4. Attach this log to your next reply.
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

Try the upgrade again and report the result.

Hi Peter,
I tried the Windows 10 upgrade but it failed again at the same point as before. It quits at ~30% updates and says there are invalid file paths in the registry. Then it resets the system back to Windows 7 and gives the error code 0xC1900101 - 0x30018 and says the installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during SYSPREP_SPECIALIZE operation.

Also, my Windows 7 says updates are available. Should I download & install them?

Provide a screenshot of the available important updates first.

Oh, sorry. I already installed the updates. Here are screenshots of the ones installed.

Not sure why KB3031432 is installed at least 3 times.
Unplug all unnecessary devices and try the upgrade again.

If it fails again attach following files when available:
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log

I unpluged everything except my wireless mouse. The upgrade failed again at the spot as before. I could not find \Rollback\setupact.err file so I included \Rollback\setuperr.log. Also, I could find no file by the name of setupapi.dev.log. The two files that are in \Rollback\setupapi\ are attached. Thanks for your help.

Hi Peter,
Do you think the problem could be my hard drive (500 GB SSD) is formated with just 1 partition?

No, that should be fine.

Connect a wired mouse instead of the wireless mouse and try the upgrade again.
If it fails, boot your computer into a Clean Boot state following these instructions: How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
After that, try to upgrade again and report the result.

Hi Peter,
Well, I somehow got my laptop all jacked up. When I try to boot it looks like Windows is starting but then it runs into a problem right about where I would normally log in using my password. Instead of the normal log in screen I get a screen that says “Login Process Initialization Failure”. “Interactive logon process initialization has failed. Please consult the event log for more details”. The only options at that point is to close the window by clicking on the “X” in the upper right corner or click on the “OK” button. Either way the laptop just cycles right back to the same screen.
I have tried to start in Safe Mode but the same error screen comes up. I’ve also tried to reload the “Last Good Configuration” but the same screen still comes up.
I do have a Macrium Reflect USB boot disk and a full backup image file I could restore if needed.
What should I do at this point?
Thanks!
