My pc has been running windows 10 build 1703 since that update was released and I've never been able to update it since. It wasnt really an issue for me before so I didn't try very hard to get it resolved. I now want to update windows to the latest version (currently 22h2).

I've tried to update with the latest ISO from microsoft that's on a bootable usb that I made with the microsoft media creation tool as my windows update in settings keeps giving me this "Your device is at risk because it’s out of date and missing important security and quality updates. Let’s get you back on track so Windows can run more securely. Select this button to start:" regardless of how many times I click check for updates. When trying to update from the ISO I get "we can't tell if your pc is ready to continue installing windows 10" right at the choose what to keep section.

Ive run the SFCFix tool, SFC scan in cmd, DISM in cmd
and components scanner, all results are attached.

Any help with this issue would be great, thanks.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hi,

Please remove the following programs:
- Avast Antivirus Free
- MiniTool Partition Wizard 12.6 (because it's illegal activated with a crack).
- Ashampoo WinOptimizer 14 & 18 (optimizers and cleaners do more harm than they claim to fix)
- Java 8 Update 301 (or update to the latest version: https://www.java.com/nl/download/)

Reboot the system and run the

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool again.

All programs removed as requested. Fixlog is below.

Was Avast removed just so it wouldn't interfere with Farbar? Would you recommend a different anti-virus program?

I recommended removing Avast because a third-party virusscanner could interfere with Windows Update as well. I would suggest to use Windows Defender as primary AV/AM nowadays. For a second opinion you could use the free version of Malwarebytes or the ESET Online Scanner. (But don't use them at this moment while we are still fixing this system.)

Could you please perform a new scan with FRST with the option List BCD checked and post both log files (FRST.txt and Addition.txt) again.

Hi,

1. Open an elevated command prompt and run the following commands.
2. Replace 0 with the actual number for the HDD/SSD where your Windows is installed
Rich (BB code):
Diskpart
list disk
select disk 0
list partition
3. Post the result in your next post.

4. Open the startmenu and type the command diskmgmt.msc and provide a screenshot of it as well.

CMD results:

Question? Is the systemdrive cloned or converted from MBR tot GPT in the past?

Rich (BB code):
\\?\Volume{0002fc75-9230-d52d-3d0c-d901eaf80500}\ (N) (Fixed) (Total:0.57 GB) (Free:0.53 GB) FAT32

Hi,

Could you please rebuild the EFI System Partiion using the following instructions. (But make always a back-up / system image.)

1. Boot the computer into the Recovery Environment - open the command prompt and run the following commands.
2. Replace 0 with the actual number of the HDD/SSD where Windows is installed.
Rich (BB code):
diskpart
list disk
select disk 0
list partition
3. Then run the following command and replace 1 with the actual number of the Windows OS partition.
Rich (BB code):
select partition 1
4. The following commands will resize the Windows OS partition and create the new EFI System Partition. (Note: the driveletter W should be free!)
Rich (BB code):
shrink desired=100
create partition efi size=100
format quick fs=fat32
assign letter=w
5. Run the following commands to list the partitions and volumes.
Code:
list partition
list volume
6. Note the drive letter where the Windows OS is installed, which is displayed after running list volume.
7. Close diskpart.
Code:
exit
8. Run the following command: Replace X with the volume letter of the Windows OS partition.
Code:
bcdboot [COLOR=rgb(184, 49, 47)]X[/COLOR]:\windows /s W:
9. Now the BCDBoot command copies the boot files from the Windows partition into the EFI System Partition and re-create the BCD store.

So I tried to follow the steps you set out for me but I seem to have run into an issue. I may be selecting the wrong partition but maybe you can put me in the right direction.

So I selected disk 0 as it is listed as the GPT disk and where windows is installed.

I then selected partition 3 as it was listed as the system partition and therefore I took that to be the Windows OS partition but when trying to execute the shrink desired=100 command I received "You may not shrink OEM, ESP, or recovery partitions, or, offline volumes.
The volume you have selected may not be shrunk."

I then selected partition 2 as it has the 930GB size and I thought that was maybe the Windows OS partition you were referring to, but when trying to execute shrink desired=100 on that partition I received "Virtual disk space error:
The specified shrink size is too big and will cause the volume to be smaller than the minimum volume size."

I've attached a picture of the cmd windows.

Hi,

Partition 3 is the current EFI partition (200 MB).
Partition 2 is the system drive were Windows is installed.

Could you please post a acreenshot of the content of the partition with driveletter N:

So which partition do I want to run your list of commands with? Partition 3 or 2?

For the partition N I assigned it a drive letter in disk management so I could see the contents in explorer and I've attached a screenshot. Also is a screenshot of Disk Part, List Volume in CMD.
