Hi,

Today, the Start button and many Windows 10 Apps on my pc stopped working. I tried sfc /scannow and DISM, but they all failed. So I ran sfcfix and got the following result.

SFCFix version 2.4.5.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2015-10-30 21:03:05.675
Microsoft Windows 8.1 - amd64

Please help me on this one.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named CKing123. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phrase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hello Top! Please do these things:

SFCFix Fix
This fix is very specific for Top's computer. Trying this fix on your own computer might damage your computer. If you are after assistance, create a new thread, and you will be assisted shortly.

Download SFCFix (by niemiro) and move the executable on your Desktop
Download the attached View attachment SFCFix.zip and move the archive to your Desktop
Note: Make sure that the file is named SFCFix.zip, do not rename it.
Save any work you have open, and close every programs
Drag the SFCFix.zip archive file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it
mMabJGT.gif

SFCFix will launch, let it complete
Once done, a file will appear on your Desktop, called SFCFix.txt
Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply

Now, to fully fix the corruptions, we will be using DISM:

DISM Repair
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
Code:
[COLOR=#0000FF]DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth[/COLOR]
Let it finish

Now, we will check to see if all the corruptions are fixed using the SFC scan:

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
Code:
[COLOR=#0000ff]sfc /scannow[/COLOR]
3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
Code:
[COLOR=#0000ff]copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"[/COLOR]
4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread
Please Note
:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Hello CKing,
Thank you so much for your help. I did as you instructed. Unfortunately, both Dism and sfc /scannow failed. Looking at the log file, there still seems to be some problem with srmtrace.dll. At first, I thought that your provided srmtrace.dll in SFCFix.zip was also corrupted, because there was nothing in the Details tab of the Properties dialog of the dll. So I replaced the dll in the zip file with the one I got from install.wim of Windows 10 installation image (which I also attached with this reply in case you want to check it) and redid the whole process again. However, I still got the same result as with using your original fix.

Here is the content of SFCFix.txt:

It seems that sfc /scannow runs cleanly now, but running "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth" still finds CBS catalog corrupts. I also attached the Dism log with this reply.

I managed to get the start menu and most metro apps working by deleting Usrclass.dat following this solution. However, many Microsoft's apps (e.g. App Store, Map, Camera) still won't open.

Great job! Although I was thinking about fixing the SFC issues, and then the Start Menu, you got most of it fixed :D

Now, lets do a fix to repair component store corruption (DISM detected corruption):

DISM Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
Code:
[COLOR=#0000ff]DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth[/COLOR]

PS: Don't worry! I haven't forgotten about the Metro App issue. We will work on this after the DISM issues are fixed

-CKing

Dism detects no issues now. Thanks a lot, CKing!

However, I still cannot open apps like Windows Store app and Maps. Digging deeper, I found this error in Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational event log:
Activation of the app Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App for the Windows.Protocol contract was blocked with error 0x80073CFC because its package is in state: 64.
Using the message to search around came up with only a few results but nothing worked. Do you have anything on this?

Anyway, here is the SFCFix result:

Let's reinstall all these apps again:

Run Powershell as Administrator by:
Press Windows + S
Search for powershell
Right-click on Powershell from search results, and click Run as Administrator

Now, in Powershell, copy and paste this command and press enter
Code:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

Does this fix the Metro apps issue?

-CKing

Nope. I already did that and it successfully reinstalled all the metro apps without error, but some apps (e.g. Store, Maps, People) have the mentioned issue.

Well, then we will use App Troubleshooter

Press Windows + X
Click on Control Panel (or press P)
Go to System and Security
Under Security and Maintenance, click Troubleshoot common computer problems
On the left side, click View all

Let it load

Click on Windows Store Apps to launch the troubleshooter, and follow on-screen instructions

Hi CKing, I'm sorry that I get back to you this late. I had been busy with my exams this past few weeks and forgot to reply.
I tried as you suggested but the troubleshooter could not find any problem.

There is a new build by Microsoft that has new features and a lot of bug fixes

Get it:

Go to Start
Click Settings
Go to Update & Security
Click Check For Update

(If it already lists Upgrade to Windows 10 Home/Pro, 1511, 10586 then click Install)

After it checks for the update, it will find Upgrade to Windows 10 Home/Pro, 1511, 10586

It is 2.5 GB long, so it will take some time to download, and it will take a few hours to install, but it will introduce new features and a lot of bugfixes

After you install it, let us know if this update fixes the issue or not

-CKing

Windows Update says my device is up to date. I think the new build is being rolled out so I may need to wait for a while. I'll report back to you when I get the update then.

Thank you very much, CKing!

That is strange. The build came out of November 12, so it should have come out

Lets see if you already have it by checking

Press Windows + X

If the menu looks like this, then you have the latest build:

Let us know whether you have the latest build or not.

No, I still have the build 10240 according to winver. My Windows + X looks like this:
Capture.PNG

Should I try to force the upgrade by clicking "Upgrade Now" on this page?

Yes, you still have build 10240

Don't click Upgrade Now, that is for Windows 7/8.1 and simply installs GWX

Instead, scroll down, and click Download Tool Now

This will download MediaCreationTool

Launch MediaCreationTool, and click Upgrade Now
Follow the on-screen instructions

Note: that when it asks you about keeping your files and programs, choose to keep everything

I took a risk and clicked that upgrade now button before you answered. It turned out just fine though. I guess GWX can detect the OS and behave like the media creation tool on Windows 10.
So I got the new build installed and all metro apps work normally now. Hooray!

Thanks again for all your help, CKing and Sysnative team. I really appreciate it. You guys are awesome!!:thumbs_up:
