I ran "sfc /scannow" and corrupt files were found -- see attached files CBS & SFCfix.txt
SFCfix failed when I ran it.

problems I noticed
1. I can not update windows 10 to newer version, currently using version 1809 (build 17763.864) I have tried regular update, windows update assistant & media creation tool installation get stuck at 90%+ using all 3 methods.

2. program freezes
a. Chrome works fine on startup, but when I close browser & try to open it again, it does not work (freezes) until I reboot
b. Firefox when I try to launch, it is struck in loop, forcing close & restart, but stuck in a loop. Tried reinstall program, but no help. c. Other program freezes - acrobat PDF files occasionally unable to close file, windows explorer occasionally unable to close window.

Thanks.

Hi!

Please start with the following:

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

Was not certain which results you needed.
Attached are 3 screenshots & a txt file.

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
    Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Running Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command
How long should this take to complete? It maybe stuck?
First 30 minutes, it was slowly processing, the % complete was increasing, then for the last 90 minutes sitting at 84.1% and does not appear to be processing.

Please attach CBS.log, but see if you can do it without closing DISM.

Everything is much slower on your PC then it should be. I am unsure why at this very moment.

I stopped the DISM command & then tried a second time.
This time process completed successfully.
Attached is new cbs.log file.

Working on windows 10 reinstall / version 1903 update using media creation tool now. Will update when completed. Thanks

Media creation tool is running for 3 hours & appears to be stuck again. Sitting at working on updates at 91% for a while. I will stop it shortly by powering off the computer.
Another option is needed.

This is the longest - approximately 8 hours. But this time stuck at the update stage, in prior installations it was stuck at the next stage (installation stage) so I do not think giving it more time will change anything.
