I cannot open "Settings" either via the Start button (flashes on and then disappears) or from the command prompt start ms-settings which yielded the response windows cannot find ms-settings. I ran sfc / scannow which yielded the response windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I ran DISM CheckHealth (no component store corruption detected); DISM ScanHealth (the component store is repairable); and DISM RestoreHealth (Error 0x800f081f. The source files could not be found. Use the source option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature).

This problem occurred after uninstalling and reinstalling my MS Office 2019 program two times (and once was with the help of MS Support & Recovery Assistant). My Office 2019 programs (Word & Excel) would not open each time after an automatic update (not by me) of MS OneDrive. I have since "disabled" OneDrive from updating via Task Scheduler.

My PC is a Lenovo ideacentre AIO 330 running Windows 10 Home (Version 21H2 / OS Build 19044.2728.

Many thanks for your help in resolving this problem.

Try running this in an elevated command prompt:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\Windows\WinSxS /LimitAccess

Here are the results from running what you recommended:

The restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the component store cannot be repaired.
Error: 0x800f081f
DISM failed. No operation was performed.
For more information, review the log file.

I've attached the DISM.log file

Thanks for moving my content to a more appropriate section. I thought I should attach the CBS log after I ran sfc / scannow.

Hi,

Upload a copy of the CBS folder
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\Logs folder.
  • Right-click on the CBS folder and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file CBS.zip to your next reply.

Hi Maxstar,

Here is some updated information before I received your notification:

After an automatic Windows update and PC restart, I am now able to access the Settings app via the Start button and see the successful update of KB5025221, KB2267602, and KB890830 in Windows Update History. I am also able to access the Settings app via the Run command box after l learned that the correct command ends in a colon (ms-settings:) which I had overlooked to include.

I ran another sfc /scannow and out of curiosity compared the two recent CBS logs (4/14 and 4/13) to an earlier one (4/5). I noticed that the number of instances for the text “cannot repair member file” dropped from 20 (4/5) to 4 (4/13) to 0 (4/14) although I have no clue exactly what may have been repaired. I also ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth again with the same result (Error 0x800f081f. The source files could not be found. Use the source option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature).

Although, my topic in regard to not being able to access the Settings app is now resolved, do I still have an issue regarding this Error 0x800f081f? I have attached the CBS.zip folder as requested.

  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Result from DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth
The restore operation completed successfully. The operation completed successfully.

I've attached the SFCFix.txt log file as requested.

Hi,

This looks good, are there any remaining issues or is everything up and running again?

So there are no more corrupted files and everything is running fine. Many thanks for your help.

Hi Maxstar,

I'm having Windows 10 Update issues again. The "Feature Update to Windows 10, version 22H2" has failed to install for the last six days with the noted error of 0x800f0900. In Windows Updates, the Status appears stuck on "Installing - 20%." I ran sfc /scannow and get the following message: Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service. Restarting my PC results in "Getting Windows ready. Don't turn off your computer" for up to an hour and sometimes longer. I would really appreciate your help. Thanks.

As you have recommended, I have started a new thread and followed the Windows Update Posting Instructions.

Can you please advise if there is a particular forum on Sysnative that deals with Firefox Browser issues and, more importantly, with the recovery of missing browser history. Thanks.
