[SOLVED] Windows 10 Pro failing to update (0x800703e6)

Hi,

I've noticed that my Windows Update is getting Error 0x800703e6 which seems to be a fairly popular error to get but a bit of a pain to fix so after spending a while I was wondering if someone could help out.

I've followed the steps in the Instructions post so the attachments hopefully contain everything needed. I've tried doing an update with a Windows 10 ISO but that resulted in a failed install and nothing happened.

Running SFC's command results in "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service." and running DIST ends with "Error: 998 Invalid access to memory location.". The crux of the issue seems to be coming down to this bit here: C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.19041.3385_none_7e1c800a7c81ffd9\\cbscore.dll [HRESULT = 0x800703e6 - ERROR_NOACCESS].

Thanks in advance.

  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Hi, thanks for the help.

I've just finished running things and things are already looking better. I've attached the latest SFCFix log and the DISM command ran without issues.

Unfortunately, the system has hit back with "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service." again. I've attached the resulting CBS log.

Thanks.

Please restart the system and then run the System File Checker again.

Aha, that's a lot more promising.

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

Yeah! Please attempt to update and let me know the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

Looks like most things have gone through now which is great, there's just one update that looks like it is still having issues which is "2024-01 Security Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034441)"

Edit: Just noticed the error code is different this time. (0x80070643)

Hi,

For now you can ignore this error, this is a known issue with KB5034441 and under investigation by Microsoft.

SymptomNext step
When you try to apply this update on a PC that has no recovery partition, the update is unsuccessful and you receive the error 0x80070643 ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE.You do not need this update if the PC does not have a recovery partition. In this case, the error can be safely ignored.

We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

With the following tool you can temporarily hide this update, just to prevent from being offered over and over again.

Download
65a7d58475a95-WuShowHide24.png
wushowhide.diagcab to hide an update.
  • Double click on the wushowhide.diagcab file and press Next.
  • Now the tool will search for updates and performs a scan to detect problems.
  • When this process is complete click on Hide updates.
  • Now an overview will appear with updates that have not yet been installed.
  • Select the update you want to hide and press Next.
  • When the troubleshooting has complete you can close the tool.

Ah okay, awesome. That update is hidden now and so Windows Update is now saying everything is up to date, thanks for the help, much appreciated.

Will I need to keep an eye on the Microsoft issue and manually unhide the update using that tool again once it is fixed?

Hi,

You're welcome. Glad to hear the main issues has been resolved and the system is up-to-date now.

I would definitely keep an eye on a new release, however, I think this update will be rolled out again with a new KB number, but I'm not sure about that!

Since the corruptions on this system are fixed I will mark this thread as solved. But you can always reply to this thread for further questions about KB5034441 if needed.
